Champions in green: the Nedbank Running Club legacy

The Nedbank Running Club, guided by the experienced leadership of Nick Bester and supported by his Nick B Sport Development company, has grown into a powerhouse of athletic development and success in South African road running. A decorated athlete himself, Bester is celebrated for his victories in the Comrades Marathon and Ironman, along with multiple top 10 finishes in elite endurance events—laying the foundation for the club’s continued excellence.

His competitive pedigree and long-term vision continue to shape the club’s high-performance culture.

Before the Nedbank era, the club operated as the Harmony Athletic Club (2000–2008), with a mission to develop South African talent capable of competing on the global stage. Supported by Harmony Gold and partners such as Reebok, the club ran development clinics across mining towns and rural communities, producing landmark achievements including Sipho Ngomane’s 2005 Comrades and Two Oceans victories and Farwa Mentoor’s trailblazing Comrades performances.
This early focus on development laid the groundwork for a legacy that would later expand nationally and internationally.

Revitalised under Nedbank’s sponsorship in 2008, the club has become a leader in developing both elite and grassroots athletes. Highlights include Comrades victories by Claude Moshiywa, Ellie Greenwood, and Olympian Gerda Steyn, as well as a historic 1–2–3 Comrades finish led by Tete Dijana. Since 2008, the club has celebrated 12 Comrades champions—seven men and five women.
These achievements reflect a sustained commitment to excellence across multiple generations of runners.

At the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers 50km, multiple officially recognised world records have been set, cementing the event’s status as one of the fastest and most prestigious ultra-distance races globally.
