Comrades Marathon Confirms 2027 Race
Says CMA Chairperson Mark Leathers: “The Comrades Marathon is bigger than any person or organisation. Thanks to our wonderful host cities, partners, sponsors and community of runners, volunteers and supporters, the planning and permissions relating to the 100th running are moving full steam ahead. I have no doubt that our centenary run will showcase the very best of our country and its phenomenal running fraternity.”
At a meeting on 10 July 2026, held between Athletics South Africa (ASA), KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) and the CMA, a number of matters were discussed. While no firm decisions were made, the CMA has been and remains keen to work with any organisation providing support and input to this iconic South African event, which injects billions into the economy. The meeting ended on a positive note and discussions are ongoing.
“A CMA Members Special General Meeting (SGM) is being scheduled to take place on 1 August 2026, where our members will decide on the way forward in relation to the athletics federation affiliation matters,” says Leathers.
The CMA is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) made up of approximately 8,000 members and governed by its Board. Says Leathers: “The current CMA Board was elected by the CMA members, based on strong governance and a runner-first mandate. Our members will therefore decide the way forward, and we will act accordingly.”
“The CMA remains dedicated to working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders in the best interests of the sport, the running community, and all who hold the Comrades Marathon dear,” he adds. “All options will be thoroughly discussed at the upcoming SGM, following which the CMA will announce its plans for the road forward.”
