Stowell had served the CMA with distinction in various capacities for over two decades, including as a former CMA Chairperson (for the years 1997-2000) as well as serving as Chairperson of the CMA Legal & Constitutional Committee during which period he contributed immensely in terms of providing his professional legal expertise, while Hlongwa-Madlala served as member of the CMA Board for two years, and for the past year as Chairperson of the Heritage & Traditions Committee.

CMA Chairperson Cheryl Winn acknowledged the honesty, integrity, decorum and conviction with which they had represented the Association, and thanked both members for their respective services to the Comrades Marathon. 

In compliance with the CMA Constitution, the Annual General Meeting saw the election of two new members to the Board, namely:

• Les Burnard
• Phumlani Ntuli

And the re-election of three members, namely:

• Celi Makhoba
• Mqondisi Ngcobo
• Steve Mkasi

The Board election process was overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).  

With the CMA being founded as an Association, the main functions of the Board are ethical leadership, corporate governance, formulation of the strategic plan and policies of the organisation and ensuring the sustainability of The Ultimate Human Race. Importantly, the Board is further tasked with retaining the world-class standards, ethos and traditions that are synonymous with this iconic event. 

The remaining Board members whose term of office will expire in November 2021 are:

• Isaac Ngwenya
• Patricia Freeman
• Zinhle Sokhela

Cheryl Winn was re-elected as Chairperson and Mqondisi Ngcobo as Vice Chairperson.
