Ngubane ready to defend title
September 23, 2020
It’s been a long time since we have seen a heading referring to an athlete ready to defend their title but that is exactly what is happening this weekend as Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Eric Ngubane is ready to reclaim his crown at the Karkloof 50 miler taking place on Saturday in Karkloof in the KwaZulu Natal province.

With the Corona virus causing a global pandemic and events around the World being cancelled outright, it is a sigh of relief to many athletes as races start to appear again.  “I feel very confident heading into this event,” said Ngubane.
“The lockdown definitely was a big problem, but I used it to focus on my weaknesses and I did a lot of strength exercises which I can see now has really benefitted me and I am feeling a lot stronger.” Whilst there were no races being run, the Nedbank running club pioneered the #NedbankRunified series, where athletes competed individually around the Country over various distances with prize money paid for the top 10 in both the men’s and women’s categories.

“I am very fortunate to my team Nedbank that put those virtual races on as it kept us motivated as a team and gave us goals to train towards. It also gave me a chance to work towards my speed and I was very happy to run 1:50:58 in the last event over 32km which had 664m of elevation, so it was a tough course.”

With the weather not looking great for Saturday and indicating a cold and wet one, Ngubane shrugs off the conditions. “I have run in extreme heat and extreme cold and it makes no difference to me as everyone in the event faces the same conditions. I am just more excited to put on my Nedbank vest and represent my team again with pride after many months of no official events.”

Come rain or sunshine, one thing for sure is that Ngubane is ready to soak it all up, and fly through the undulations of Karkloof
