SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF ROAD RUNNING IN DURBAN
The oldest race in the SPAR Women’s Challenge series – the Durban race – turns 30 this year and organisers predict a fast and exciting race as part of the celebrations on Sunday. The Durban Challenge takes place two weeks after South Africa’s most famous race, the Comrades Marathon.

With the 95th Comrades Marathon upon us next weekend, the Nedbank Running Club has once again formed a formidable team dubbed as the green dream team who have a goal of not only dominating the top 10 but having the first athlete cross the line in the well-known green colours.

Nedbank Running Club athlete, Gerda Steyn has declared her intention to take the title at the 94th Comrades Marathon run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg on 9 June.
After narrowly missing the record in last month’s Two Oceans Marathon, Steyn has enjoyed a trouble-free training camp in the mountains of France, together with 3rd place finisher from last year Steve Way and Anthony Clark, both running this year’s race in the colours of Nedbank Running Club.

2019 Comrades Marathon Prize Money
If the winner in either the Men’s or Women’s races in this year’s Comrades Marathon breaks the Up Run Best Times of Leonid Shvetsov (2008 – 5:24:49) or Elena Nurgalieva (2006 – 6:09:24) respectively, he or she will take home a minimum of R1-million in Comrades prize money, comprised of a first prize of R500,000 plus a R500,000 incentive for breaking the Best Time; in addition to prizes for First South African (R200,000) and First KZN Man and Woman (R45,000).

Grantham eyes to be amongst the greats at Comrades
Originally from Great Britain but now residing in Spain, Lee Grantham is not your average elite runner. With his long wavy hair, Grantham could easily pass as a surfer, but once he laces up his Nike running shoes, Grantham lets his feet do the talking, and the longer he runs, the better he seems to get.

Since 1921, a total of 12,839 runners have completed the epic ultramarathon more than ten times each, thus earning their place on the coveted Comrades Green Number Roll of Honour.

Tyali makes welcome return to winning
The 2nd running of the Central Gauteng cross country league went underway this past weekend and saw a welcome return to the top of the podium for Soweto’s Xolisa Tyali who took victory in the men’s race, just 1 second in front of team mate Namakhoe Nkhasi.

D-day for submission of Comrades qualifying details
Today (Thursday, 2 May 2019) is the final day for submission of Comrades qualifying details for this year’s ultramarathon on Sunday, June 9th. More than 20,600 athletes’ qualifying details have already been captured by the Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) IT & Entries Team.

Nedbank women set to shine in series
This weekend sees the start of the Spar Grand Prix, with action kicking off on Saturday in Port Elizabeth. Now in its 13th year, the series has produced some memorable races and this year’s winner will take home a crisp R185 000, with R65 000 for 2nd and R40 000 for 3rd. For the first time, the Nedbank running club have assembled a green dream team specifically targeting this year’s series and the aim of the team is to produce the winner of each event as the series goes around the Country.
