Tell us a bit about yourself—how long have you been running, and what distances do you enjoy?
T: My name is Thamsanqa “Thamie” Ngubane, originally from Durban, a proud Zulu man who loves and dedicates himself in whatever he does. I’ve been running for a year and 7 months now started when I was inspired by a good friend of mine and his family. I enjoy running 10km, actually you can call me the “10km king”.
S: I have been running since 2014. I particularly enjoy the 21.1km distance and focus on consistency and fitness, which allows me to comfortably run with runners of all levels (except the elite).
What motivated you to take on the role of junior race director for the TRACN4 Elands Marathon?
T:? So before I started running I was introduced to this life by helping out at the 2024 TRACN4 Elands Marathon. I saw how everyone was so passionate about every single role they played and the unity within the directors and the club as a whole.
S: I was motivated by my love for road running and my passion for serving the running community. Taking on the role of junior race director allows me to contribute, learn, and help ensure a memorable race experience for everyone.
What have you learned so far about the work that goes into planning a major event like the TRACN4 Elands Marathon?
T: I’ve learned a couple of things, but what really stands out is that time is of the essence, the earlier we do things the better. The other one is that no matter how many disagreements we might have we’re still a team with one goal at the end of the day.
S: I’ve learned that being part of the organising team involves far more than what runners see on race day. Careful planning, coordination with multiple stakeholders, strong teamwork, and clear communication are essential to ensure everything runs smoothly and safely.
What has surprised you the most about the race organizing process?
T: The work that goes into organising a marathon is crazy. The amount of meetings, decisions that have to be taken that can affect the whole marathon and make or break its reputation.
S: Working with a diverse group of perspectives and personalities was a valuable experience and highlighted how essential teamwork and effective communication are in race organisation.
What do you think makes TRACN4 Elands Marathon special compared to other races?
T: Besides this marathon being one of the best marathons in our province and a Comrades Marathon and TotalSports Two Oceans qualifier, the route is fabulous and easy. Not forgetting that we sponsor two schools, one in Waterval Boven the other in Ngodwana, a local choir as well. So it’s not just about the running but it’s to giving back to the community.
S: Running through the tunnel!
