Lite2Nite 12-hour Relay – 28 September 2024

8 Members competed in this event and they were extremely competitive as suggested in the previous newsletter. The name of the team we entered was Nedbank Green Dream Machine” and they were awesome during the long day of running and even the changing weather conditions could not dampen the spirit of these athletes. The team consisted of the following runners:

  • Harry Marx
  • Michelle Spies
  • Sampie Mokgatla
  • Bonolo Bonokoane
  • Joseph Dzhuva
  • Lourens Erasmus
  • Tumelo Motaung
  • Bongani Dhlomo

Some statistics of the 12-hour Relay which was a huge success and it was certainly thoroughly enjoyed, and it was the money spent worthwhile.

  1. We ended second from thirty-nine teams (Silver medal) for the mixed teams

Receiving the well earned Silver Medal

  1. Our best lap was 3:00 from Bongani who managed to set the fastest lap of the day and with that he also set the second fastest lap of the day with time of 3:21

  1. Our slowest lap was 5:49 with an an excellent average time for the 167 laps of 4:18 per lap. The winning teams fastest lap was 3:29 and the slowest 4:56 with an average time of 4:11. It must however be noted that the winning team consists of only male athletes. They however ran superbly and managed to complete 171 laps.

  1. Individual performances:

  • Sampie - 30 laps with best lap of 3:38. All Sampie's 30 laps were under 4 minutes per lap. Sampie you are an inspiration to us all.

  • Harry - 29 laps with best lap of 3:43. Thank you Harry for all your arrangements and what you have done to make this such a success.

  • Michelle - 28 laps with best lap of 4:07. Thank you for your positive attitude and willingness to contribute under your circumstances. You have triggered the whole process of competing in this event.

  • Bongani - 26 laps with best lap of 3:00 on lap number 165. Even the guys from the winning team came over to congratulate this youngster on the awesome lap he did. Bongani you are going to be a future star for Nedbank Running Club. Bongani also ran the second fastest lap of the day with 3:21.

  • Lourens - 19 laps with best lap of 4:42. Nothing beats experience!

  • Tumelo - 19 laps with best lap of 4:24. The team enjoyed your attitude during the whole day, and you were the first one on the team who ran a lap in the rain.

  • Joseph - 9 laps with best lap of 5:04. He only joined later. The oldest member of the team but just as valuable to the team as all the other members.

  • Bonolo - 7 laps with best lap of 4:17. She also joined later, and I think she was the one person who surprised herself with her lap times.

We asked for comments from the team and I want to post the exact comments they issued after the race:

Harry Marx

“At first glance running for 12 hours on-end was a very daunting sight, but little did I know that we had a team that was fast, supportive and hungry for more than a participation medal. We started at 06h00 with the spirits and pace high and Sampie Mokgatla set the tone for the day. From there on of the running only became faster! This was a day that I will remember for the rest of my life, where 8 complete strangers came together and really helped each other to perform better, run harder or faster and at the end of the day exceeded the expectations that any of us had for the day. We quickly realized that age is not something that you should use to measure a person’s performance, as Bongani ran the fastest 1km lap for the day at an age of twenty-one years old. Furthermore, we constantly had the whole committee who helped with refreshments, words of encouragement and even advice on how to perform and run better. Overall, this day was filled with laughter, memories, and the sport we all love so much. I sincerely hope that we can use this occasion to bond as a club, to get to know each other better and give advice to upcoming runners in the future.

Michelle Spies

“Saturday's Lite2Nite relay circuit exceeded all expectations! Our Nedbank team of eight strangers-turned-teammates discovered the power of camaraderie. Sharing stories, laughter, and encouragement, Witnessing diverse ages, genders, and running levels working together was truly inspiring. The day was challenging but not even wind or rain could dampen our spirits. As the final hours intensified, our collective determination propelled us forward. Finishing second place! Only 4 laps behind the winning team, what an incredible achievement. Felt so proud to be a part of this team! I urge fellow Nedbank members to join the adventure next year”

Tumelo Motaung.

“In my entire running experience.  Yesterday was my absolute best

Best times throughout the laps.

Best moments together with my mates. I am looking forward to moments like these in the future.

Team spirit, sportsmanship to our competitors was the absolute best

I believe this initiative will serve as an inspiration to other members of the club.

Thank you  everyone. Great experience, very welcoming Team Spirit.

I am very much at my best right now.

Organizers and management, we shall continue to make you proud”.

Bonolo Bonokoane

“My experience with lite2nite was thrilling. The cheering from my teammates while running was great because it added onto my speed. Chilling with everyone under the gazebo with all sorts of snacks and great energy added to the wonderful atmosphere. I must say myself that being told to chase the Meyerton guy who was holding the flag unleashed a speed in me that I had never seen before. It was fun and memorable”

Bongani Dhlomo

“Experience gained at the Lite2Nite race

I managed to witness the moral support of my teammates, the love ,kindness and determination of getting the 1st place ...although we  ended up with the silver but it's a motivation going Forward we plan GOD decides ..I am happy and proud now to wear a Nedbank RC Vest knowing that I have lot of Supportive teammates that will push me to do good and install Winning mentality in Me ..to More athletes who are doubtful to join this race Next Year I plead for them to join and see the greatness am talking About ,,we are willing to welcome them and apply same positive philosophy they did to us. Thank you"

Lourens Erasmus

“Thank you very much everyone... was a huge privilege to be part of such a dynamic team”

Joseph Dzhuva

“Also, from me, in Afrikaans dit was fantasties, in English it was fantastic to the runners and the management, thank you very much, may God bless us all and also the team”

Management

‘Good morning "TEAM” Hope you are all rested after yesterday's performances. It was a tremendous effort from all of you and you showed everyone what teamwork is all about. Each one of you gave your best and I believe some of you even surprised yourself. It made me so proud to be a part of this occasion.
