Nedbank Running Club set to dominate Soweto Marathon

After podium dominations in last year’s Soweto Marathon which included both the men’s and women’s winners, the Nedbank running club returns to this Sunday’s Soweto Marathon return to the people’s race looking to dominate yet again and both defending champions Daba Ifa Debele and Chaltu Bedo Negashu return to the race which has become known as the people’s race.

Debele leads a strong men’s contingent which includes his fellow countrymen Muhajir Haridin Sraj and Abera Mamo Haile. Back in 2019, Sraj finished 4th in the Soweto Marathon and will be looking at breaking through into the podium spots. Haile ran a personal best of 61:49 at this year’s Mandela Bay Half Marathon and has the pedigree to stage a huge upset on race day.

South Africa’s Lebogang Khonkobe, Joel Mmone and David Manja lead the local charge for the Nedbank running club. Khonkobe is the older brother of Onalenna who this past weekend took victory at the SA Run 4 Cancer 48km. Joining them is Lesotho superstar Namakoe Nkhasi, a member of the Nedbank running club green dream team and seasond campaigner. Nkhasi holds Lesotho national records of 13:21 for 5000m, 28:06 for 10 000m and 27:52 for 10km on the road, and together with a half marathon best of 1:01:01, is aiming for big things.

“I wanted to run the Cape Town Marathon but then we changed the plan to Soweto,” said the man who trains in the same group as Stephen Mokoka who narrowly missed out on victory in Cape Town last month. “The training has gone well, and I am looking forward to a good race on Sunday.” With only one marathon to his name back in 2019, Nkhasi is someone to lookout, especially given the pedigree of his fellow Basotho countrymen at previous editions of the Soweto Marathon.

Negashu returns as defending champion after taking victory last year in a time of 2:40:56 where she led a Nedbank running club 1-2-3 across the finish line. Last year’s 3rd placed finisher Tinebebe Nebiyu Ali also returns to the people’s race. They make the trip to South Africa with fellow countrywomen and Nedbank running club teammates Hiyane Geshe Lama, Worke Degu Amene, Gadise Getachew Bekele and Selam Gabre.

Gebre is becoming a household name in South Africa and yesterday was crowned 2nd place overall in the 2023 Spar Ladies Grand Prix series, finishing on the podium in all events this year. She also set new personal bests this year over the 10km and half marathon distances and her 31:43 clocking over 10km puts her on the international stage, performance wise.

Kenyan Gladys Jepchirchir and South Africa’s Fikile Mbuthuma round out the Nedbank running club’s elite women’s field. The Soweto Marathon takes place on Sunday morning from Nasrec and will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport TV.

SPAR Grand Prix Awards

ETHIOPIAN TADU NARE WINS HER THIRD CONSECUTIVE SPAR GRAND PRIX

Ethiopian Tadu Nare (Nedbank) won her third consecutive SPAR Grand Prix by notching up an unassailable 120 points after winning four of the six races in the series with times fast enough to score bonus points on each occasion.

Under the 2023 rules, where an athlete’s four best scores over the season count for the final tally, Nare elected to miss the final race in Johannesburg, so she could prepare for the Chicago Marathon on October 8.

Nare is only the third athlete after Rene Kalmer and Irvette van Zyl to score a hat-trick of SPAR Grand Prix wins.

Fellow Ethiopian Selam Gebre (Nedbank) finished in second place with 116 points. After finishing runner-up in the first 5 races this year, she finally collected her first-ever win in a SPAR Grand Prix race in Jozi when Nare gave the race a miss.

In a podium clean sweep by foreign athletes, Lesotho international Blandina Makatisi (Maxed Elite) edged the top South African, Glenrose Xaba (Boxer) by a single point, 109 to 108, to take third place. Cacisile Sosibo (Boxer AC – 80 points), Cian Oldknow (Hollywood AC – 72 points) and Kesa Molotsane (Murray and Roberts RC – 71 points) rounded out the top 7.

Nare collects a whopping R200 000 for her efforts, while Gebre takes home R100 000.

For the first time, the top 5 South African athletes are being rewarded financially over and above their Grand Prix winnings. By clinching this competition-within-a-competition, Xaba wins R75 000. Sosibo in second takes home R50 000 and Oldknow R30 000. This lifted the overall Grand Prix prize purse to R765 000. Adding in the cash on offer at the six individual races, a total of R1.9 million was earned by these runners over the season.

Judy Bird (Boxer) once again won the over-60 years category. This ever-consistent Grandmaster has made a clean sweep of her age group category for an impressive 3 years in a row, winning every race. In a tight contest in the 50-to-59-year category, traditional rivals Ronel Thomas (Boxer) and Janene Carey (Phantane) locked horns once again, with Thomas squeaking home by a single point – 39 to 38.

Makhosi Mhlongo’s 2 bonus points victories were enough to take her to the top of the 40-49- year category.

In the club competition, Boxer, with 531 points from 25 scorers, took the overall win ahead of Nedbank (404 from 30) and newcomer Hollywood (209 from 6).

Nare said the SPAR Women’s 10km races were the cornerstone of her success as a high-profile athlete.

“I lover SPAR and the SPAR races and have always felt very welcome.

“I want to encourage young South African athletes to use the SPAR Grand Prix series as their backbone for speed and endurance.

“My first SPAR race as a junior was my first race internationally.  I remember it so clearly. It changed the whole of my life and the way I think,” said Nare.

“I was beaten several times and I used to feel frustrated, but I kept going until I became a champion. I am happy to defend my title and I want to do so next year as well.

“Thank you to SPAR and to the lovely people of South Africa,” said Nare.

Xaba said she felt blessed to be the first South African to receive the additional prize money.

“We thank the SPAR Women’s series for motivating us and for helping us to compete with our sisters from Ethiopia, Kenya and Zimbabwe. I think winning this award will be made work harder in future,” said Xaba.

“We at SPAR are very proud to sponsor the SPAR Grand Prix, which after 15 years is firmly established as arguably the world’s leading road running series for women,” said SPAR National Sponsorship and Events Manager, Charlene Subbarayan.

“Congratulations to Tadu for another imperious display of front-running.

“We are also delighted that this year, we are also able to reward the top South African runners, who responded to the challenge by taking on the East Africans, who dominate distance running across the world,” said Subbarayan.

Nedbank running club dominates SA Run 4 Cancer event

The Nedbank running club had a successful weekend out at the SA Run 4 cancer event which hosted a 48km ultra marathon, 32km, half marathon and 10km, with athletes in the famous green colors winning both the men’s and ladies’ races in both the 48km and 32km events.

In the headline 48km event, Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Onalenna Khonkobe was in a class f his own, taking the victory in 2:37:57. The youngster who is coached by Nedbank running club development coach Pio Mpolokeng has had a splendid year so far, also finishing in 2nd place at the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers 50km.

“I am very happy with how the race went and to close off my season well,” said Khonkobe. “We all ran together in a bunch, and I tested the guys near 38km and when nobody came with me, I just decided to keep pushing all the way to the finish.”

Khonkobe picked up R100 000 for his victory. In 3rd teammate Dennis Kipkosgei from Kenya picked up R25 000 to round off the podium. In the women’s race, it was a Nedbank running club 1-2-3 as the team dominated the event upfront. Margaret Jepchumba ran a very fast race to remain unchallenged to the finish, crossing the line in a quick 3:03:31 ahead of teammate Shelmith Muriuki who finished 2nd just under 6 minutes adrift. Tarakinyu has had great success in South Africa including victory in last year’s Two Oceans Half Marathon. His teammate Annie Chrissa was victorious in the women’s race, crossing the line victorious in 2:11:41.
