Nedbank Running Club National End of Year Letter

Dear Nedbank Running Club Chairmen, Committees, Members and Sponsors

Nick Bester - Nedbank Running Club National Manager

Last year turned out to be one of the wildest years with the introduction of Covid19, that saw the whole World come to a complete standstill, and with that sport was stopped. Our favourite races were cancelled and we could not be together as a green family. Coming into 2021, we were optimistic that things would be back to normal again. However, as we all now know, that was not the case, with many races being postponed or cancelled but it did end up being better than 2020.

Our familiar Nedbank green gazebos came out once again at races that did end up taking place, and although we did miss out on some big events yet again like the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons, we did excel in other events and also saw the first ever Nedbank Breaking Barriers 50km event take place which turned out to be an astounding event.

When races did happen this year, one thing for sure is that the Nedbank RC athletes stepped up when it mattered most and performed exceptionally well. For this, I thank you very much. I also thank our amazing sponsors for sticking with our team in the most trying of times. All of you collectively is what makes this green team #MoreThanAClub and like family.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of our different Nedbank running clubs, operating professionally, using initiative and motivating all of our athletes under very tough conditions by the capable and strong leadership of our Chairmen and various Club Committees. They must be applauded for the manner in which they looked after the interest of our club members and sponsors of the Nedbank Running Clubs across South Africa and the rest of Africa.

We adapted to change as a team. We had our ultra-distance stars stepping down in a big way to go off the road and onto the track, our athletes ran more cross country, trail running and overall took part in any opportunities that they were given. Not only did this benefit our loyal sponsors, but our athletes also improved their abilities. Most notably Nedbank RC athlete Peter Muthubi who ran a lot of track and cross country, working on his speed after many years in the ultras. In 2021 he ran personal bests over 10km and 21,1km running faster than he has ever run before in his over 15 years of running.

Throughout the year, there were many great performances from our athletes, and whilst it will be impossible to list every one of our accolades and podium finishes, let’s take a trip through 2021 to showcase some of the amazing feats we achieved as a club.

Nick Bester - Nedbank Running Club National Manager

Achievements during 2021

NEDBANK BREAKING BARRIERS 50KM

After a successful 2020 which saw the Nedbank Runified series captivate the country becoming the biggest mass participation virtual series on the continent, the bigger and better Nedbank Runified series showcased on 23 May where Nedbank Runified: Breaking Barriers 50km took place in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

With LIVE TV and International livestreaming, the race attracted a host of both International and Rest Of Africa entrants joining the best of the best South African runners with no less than 7 former Comrades champions will be toeing the line in the spectacle that aims at breaking the World 50km record in the process.

The event itself presented a race within a race where athletes were not only chasing the first prize of R100 000 up for grabs for the winner, but a hefty R150 000 for a new IAU World record. The times the athletes had targeted were 2:43:38 in the men’s race which belongs to the late Thompson Magawana and 3:07:20 in the ladies’ race belonging to Britain’s Aly Dixon.

With the ladies’ race kicking off first at 07:15, Nedbank RC athletes Gerda Steyn and Irvette Van Zyl who are Tokyo bound for the Olympic Games Marathon were in the race as pace setters, going off at the required pace to break the record. From the get-go a small pack of women slipped in behind them consisting of Nedbank Internationals Dominika Stelmach and Alexandra Morozova with Hollywood Bet’s Nontokozo Mkhize running off the back of the pack.

Consisting of 5 laps of a 10km loop, gaps started forming as early as 15km as Van Zyl and Steyn, scheduled to run to 30km, stuck to the World record schedule. First to drop off was Morozova and by the time it came to 30km and the pacers to step off, only Kenya’s Lillian Chemweno who came from behind was still in contention.

This marked the story of the day as Van Zyl asked race director Nick Bester to stay in the race. “I got to 30km and gave Nick a thumbs up or down if I could continue the race,” said Van Zyl. “He gave me the thumbs up to continue and that’s where I began to mentally prepare to go the whole way.”

Van Zyl was not challenged to the finish as she crossed the line elated not only with a win, but a new IAU World 50km record with a time of 3:04:23. Behind her, Chemweno on her debut ultra-held on for 2nd, also crossing the line under the former record finishing in 3:05:00. Closing off the podium was Stelmach giving the Nedbank running club a 1-2-3 finish.

The men’s race which started at 07:45 saw a big bunch of athletes together behind pacemakers Adam Lipschitz and Sipho Mbanjwa who meticulously clocked off km splits of 3:15 per km. The halfway mark was reached in 1:41:20, predicting a 2:42:40, just under a minute under the existing world record. Still a big pack remained comprising of former Comrades winners David Gatebe, Bongmusa Mthembu and Edward Mothibi, with a host of East African runners and shorter distance athletes making their debuts.

With Lipschitz and Mbanjawa stepping off at 30km, Nedbank’s Xolisa Tyali took up the front running breaking up the bunch. As they approached the last lap of 10km, the race was down to four with Nedbank running club Kenyan Shadrack Kiptoo showing his prescene up front together with Jonas Makhele and Ntsindiso Mphakati in tow. Sibusisio Kubheka who recently finished 6th in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality half marathon and making his ultra-debut was sitting comfortably at the back of the group.

With 5km to go, the fastest marathon runner in the field from Nedbank running club Ethiopi, Ketema Negasa, joined the leaders who had slowed the pace when it became tactical. On the last turn point to make their way to the finish on Marine Drive, Kiptoo threw in surges would break the pack down to 3 together with Makhele and Negasa, but a huge sprint from Negasa with just 1km to go was the kick they had all been waiting for.

Negasa did not look back as he crossed the line victorious in a new IAU 50km world record time of 2:42:06. Makhele running the race of his life finished in 2nd with Mphakathi holding on for 3rd. Such was the class of the field; 6 men ran under the former world record best.

The Nedbank Breaking Barriers 50km is set for a return to Gqeberha next year with 6 March the current tentative date set. As always, the race will be bigger and better. Stay tuned to our website and social media platforms for updates on the event.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

The Nedbank Running Club’s Development Programs across the country grew strongly across 2021 with many talents identified, as well as numerous national titles and individual and team medallists.

Former marathon star Pio Mpolokeng, manager and coach of the Nedbank Running Club Klerksdorp in Central North West is one of the best coaches and development officers in South Africa and has worked extremely hard  scouting for new talent in the North West Province. We will see his team next year on the roads with several of his development athletes expected to perform at the highest level in major races in the country under his mentorship. Another boost to the development team in Central North West was the addition of South African running icon Matthew Temane.

We have also seen tremendous growth as well as initiative with the superb work of the NRC’s Development group in Soweto, under the very capable chairmanship of Siyaya Khoza. Siyaya kept on advising and recommend training programs to his development squad to be ready for 2022.

The development club in Carletonville under the watchful eye of 2012 London Olympian Coolboy Ngamole is still going strong. Additionally, former Comrades champ Ludwick Mammobola, Nedbank development squad in Limpopo continues to grow after opening in the beginning of 2020 and they are growing fast in numbers with quality runners in their camp.

Nedbank Fastlegs running Club under the guidance of Kantoor Nkoane in Bloemfontein is stable and they are getting ready for the 2022 season.

The Nedbank Skosana Development initiative in Gauteng North is also moving forward. This club is under the management of SA athlete Enoch Skosana, a multiple SA representative. His athletes are ruling the cross-country and track scene in Pretoria and did organise and present the very successful Nedbank/Skosana 10km road race for the 3rd consecutive year. Unfortunately due to road works, this year’s event has been postponed to February 2022.

We are so grateful to our headline sponsor Nedbank, as well as all of our other sponsors who make not only the club and everything possible, but contribute in a huge was to the development of South Africa’s brightest stars and goes a long way in assisting in their dreams and goals.

Most importantly is the faith that our sponsor Nedbank has in our clubs, and we want to take this opportunity to thank them wholeheartedly for the on-going support during this extremely different and tough times for all sporting mass events. With a sponsor such as Nedbank, the Nedbank Running Clubs and athletes can approach the future with confidence that they will stay supporting them -even in tough times when it is needed most.

December 2020

Nedbank Skosana 10km a success

The rain may have come out on Saturday morning, but that didn’t damper the spirits of runners who got to experience a real race again with the annual Nedbank RC Skosana 10km taking place.

With the event signaling the first official race back in Pretoria since the Covid19 lockdowns and restrictions were enforced, a field of just under 300 runners set off from the Kgosi Mampuru sports fields.

The new way of hosting races was put into full force with athletes arriving at the event. All entries for the event were done online beforehand and instead of athletes arriving and filling out entry forms, health screening forms were done, and every athlete’s temperature was checked on arrival, to ensure maximum safety at the event.

The event was graced with the presence of Comrades champion and Nedbank running club green dream team athletes Edward Mothibi, Juan van Deventer and Irvette van Zyl

January 2021

The year started off well for the Nedbank running club and development team. Under the watchful eye of coach

South African running legend Matthews Temane joins the Nedbank running club. Temane joins coach Pio Mpolokeng in the Central North West Development set up. Temane is mostly remembered for his 1:00:11 half marathon in East London back in 1987 which was then a World record

19 year old Nedbank running club Ethiopia’s Tadu Nare stepped down in distance and ran in the Ethiopian 1500m trials for the Olympic Games. She finished 4th in her heat and was then selected to be part of the Ethiopian preparation squad for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Gerda Steyn raced to her second fastest time ever when she took victory in the Supersports 10km night race in Dubai.  She ran a time of 32:33

February 2021

With many races cancelled or postponed due to a new wave of Covid, the Comrades Marathon announces that its

event will not take place in 2021.

Towards the end of February, there was a return to running, albeit this time only on the track, and many Nedbank RC athletes took full advantage of the given opportunities. In Central Gauteng, it was a welcome return to the track for Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Irvette Van Zyl who took out her spikes for the first time since 2017 as she took on the 5000m in Boksburg. She was joined by Nedbank teammates Stella Marais, Charlene Archer and Chrizell Roberts.

The 3-time Soweto Marathon winner took victory in 16:55, with Marais taking 2nd in 17:29. “This morning was a lot of fun out there,” said Van Zyl afterwards. “I must thank all the awesome Nedbank ladies who came out to run. You’re the best!”

March 2021

For the second week in a row, there were smiles galore on the faces of Nedbank running club athletes. And it was just for the fact that they were out doing what they love the most but stepping back atop podiums around the Country.

With the action kicking off on Friday evening down in Durban, the Nedbank running club Kzn athletes descended down to the Kings Park athletics track to take part in the men’s 5000m. The longest event of the night was the men’s 3000m. this action-packed event saw 17 athletes toeing the line with 5 athletes in the colours of Nedbank running club. The pace was fast but there was no match for Anthony Timoteus who was victorious in a fast time of 8:10. Teammates Andre Afrika (8:20) and Star Shayamano (8:23) were 3rd and 4th respectively.

Star trail athlete Eric Ngubane took victory in the 40km Drakensburg Northern Trail run. His time of 4:35:16 saw him finish nearly 30 minutes ahead of the 2nd placed finisher

With races off the calendar again in South Africa due to a 3rd wave of Covid19 cases and the country heading into level 4 lockdown again, Nedbank running club came out in support of its athletes once again, by awarding cash prizes to its athletes who still promoted the team and it’s sponsors online.

Having done the same last year when the Country went into a hard 21-day lockdown, Nedbank running club national team manager Nick Bester said that due to the team’s sponsors, the club survived because of their support. “We have seen so many devastating losses and athletes have suffered tremendously by this pandemic but with our valuable sponsors, we have managed to keep supporting athletes,” said Bester.

Cash prizes are being awarded to athletes who have come up with initiative and creativity via their social media accounts by promoting the team and it’s sponsors. From yummy smoothies, recipes and training tips, athletes have really stood united and kept the team spirit going. First place receives a cash prize of R3000, followed by R2000 for 2nd, R1000 for 3rd and R500 each for the rest of the top 10.

“As a club we have such valuable sponsors and our athletes not only perform with their feet but support our sponsors online and we are grateful for that,” says Bester.

Games Marathon. In extreme humidity and tough conditions, Johannes finished 11th with Steyn finishing just behind in 15th. Nedbank RC’s Irvette Van Zyl was also in action but an unfortunate injury saw her having to stop midway through the race.

The Spar Ladies Grand Prix Series 10km which was supposed to kick off in June but was postponed due to Covid19 finally kicks off with its first event in Pietermaritzburg. Over a lap course format, Nedbank RC’s Tadu Nare ran a fast 32:22 on her own to clinch victory in the first of 6 events. Patience Murowe and Stella Marais finished in 8th and 10th respectively.

At the World u20 championships in Nairobi, Kenya, Nedbank running club juniors represented the country well with Marione Fourie and Jason Bowers proudly flying the green dream team flag high. Teammate Renier De Villiers who was scheduled to run the 800m and 1500m unfortunately had a freak accident cutting his foot open and had to withdraw from the team that departed to Kenya a week before travelling

September 2021

In a busy racing month, Nedbank RC Ethiopia’s Tadu Nare collected another 3 wins in the month of September at the Spar Ladies Grand Prix 10km series, making it 4 wins from 4 starts in the 6 leg series. Her winning times were once again quick and she won with big margins. In Cape Town, Nare ran a world class 31:28 which was a record for the event as well as one of the fastest 10km ever run in South Africa. Next up was Durban where she took the title in 32:06, followed by teammate Gerda Steyn who podiumed in 3rd. Rounding off in Tshwane, Nare took the win in 32:56, with Steyn once again on the podium in 3rd.

Just as the Nedbank running club did earlier this year at the THIRSTI AFRICANX 3 day trail event at Paul Cluver Wines in Grabouw, the team excelled yet again with podium finishes including 3 wins over three different events in the newly formed THIRSTI AFRICANX TRAILRUN 1-Day XPERIENCE. In the 42km, Nedbank RC teammates Collin

Kanyimo and Juan van Deventer set out in front on a course that features a total of 1160m of climbing. Van Deventer had earlier in the year won the 3 day event together with teammate Eric Ngubane but in the 1 day event which was run as individuals and not in pairs of 2, he started to struggle and Kanyimo kept the pace high up front. After 2 hours 58 minutes of running, Kanyimo crossed the line victorious to clock 2:58:21. Van Deventer held on to finish 3rd in 3:14:25. In the 24km, Nedbank RC teammates Raydon Balie finished 3rd  and Anel Terblanche was a runaway victor taking the ladies title.

The 2-day ASA National Cross-Country Championships were held at Hutchison Park in Kwa Zulu Natal coastal town of Amanzimtoti. Nedbank RC had a host of athletes representing their various provinces and some of the athletes showed a glimpse of bright futures ahead.

Under the guidance of coach Siyaya Khoza from the Nedbank RC Soweto development team, Reatlegile Mosweu who went into his boys U17 6km event as favourite and teammate Realeboga Smith who took on the boys under 15 4km, both took gold and individual national titles on the day.

The boys under 19 8km was a highlight of the day with the country’s most promising stars lining up to navigate the 4 lap course. Nedbank RC athlete Jason Bowers who recently represented South Africa at the World u20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, was a runaway victor, covering the final two laps by himself to earn his national title in a time of 25:31. Nedbank RC teammate Bakgang Kgokong finished 9th.

There were many more medals on the day for the green dream team as well. Former Two Oceans Marathon winner George Ntshiliza picked up an individual bronze medal for his 3rd place finish in the men’s 40-45 age group, finishing the 8km course in a time of 28:25.

The fiercely contested senior men’s 4km was contested late in the day and as expected, the pace was brutal from the moment the starters pistol was fired. Nedbank RC Cape town athlete Anthony Timotheus was rewarded from a well-judged race to take the bronze medal and a spot on the podium with a very quick 12:12 for the undulating course. Nedbank RC teammate Bruce-Lynn Damons finished 13th in 12:36.

There was another bronze medal from the stable of Pio Mpolokeng who heads up the Nedbank RC Klerksdorp Development team in the boys under 16 6km. Dino Nako ran a brilliant race to finish 3rd in a quick 20:07.

In the senior women’s 10km, Stella Marais fresh from her 10km PB at last week’s Spar ladies 10km, battled with the heat on the day but still finished strong in 7th position.

On day 1, the young kids had their first experience of a national championship. In the boys under 10 2km, Nedbank RC Gauteng North athlete Kaleb van Niekerk earned a silver medal for his 2nd place finish in an extremely impressive 7:04. Rozellin van Niekerk finished 7th in the girls under 12 3km. She ran a time of 12:20.

October 2021

October was another busy month for Tadu Nare. It was another 2 victories for the young Nedbank RC Ethiopian athlete who made it 6 wins from 6 starts at the Spar Grand Prix series, also taking the overall series win in the process. In Johannesburg, Nare was yet again a runaway victor over the tough 2 lap course in Johannesburg. She won in a time of 32:33 with Irvette Van Zyl making a welcome return from injury to finish on the podium in 3rd. In the final event in Gqeberha, strong winds on race day prevented Nare from running a sub 31 min but nevertheless she still emerged victorious in 32:33. Nare became the 2nd Nedbank RC athlete in a row to emerge victorious at the top of the table after teammate Helalia Johannes took overall victory in the previous edition.

With the Cape Town Marathon making it’s comeback as a mass event after a virtual elite only edition the previous year, the Nedbank RC held a meet and greet and shake out run from the Sea Point lighthouse the day before the race. It was a great opportunity for the public to meet their favourite Nedbank RC athletes and many relished in the opportunity to run alongside their hero’s and take a selfie afterwards.

It was a weekend that felt like normality was back with the running of the Cape Town Marathon and trail events held on Saturday and Sunday in the mother city. Nedbank running club was out in action and started off with a podium finish on the Saturday in the trail event.

Run over 46km of an undulating and technical course, Nedbank RC’s Collin Kanyimo ran a well fought race to finish 3rd. After leading for the majority of the event, Kanyimo lost time in the last 10km but still showed tenacity to hang on to the podium.

Sunday morning saw the start of Africa’s only gold label marathon which also sees the event as a candidate to join the big league of marathons by hopefully becoming a World Marathon Major by 2025. A large group formed in the men’s race with a very big Nedbank RC contingent upfront as the race went through the 15km mark at a projected 2:10 finish tempo. Included in the lead group were South Africans Phillimon Mathiba and Edward Mothibi the 2019 Comrades winner together with Nedbank RC Ethiopia’s Gebru Redahgne in tow.

A break in the group with 10km to go saw the lead pack string out as the weather went from sunny to pouring rain in the blink of an eye. Redahgne held on for 2nd, crossing the line in a new pb of 2:10:17. Behind him, Nedbank RC teammates Isaac Mpofu and Ngondizashe Ncube from Zimbabwe came from behind finishing in 7th and 10th respectively. Mothibi held on for a huge pb to finish in 2:13:54 behind former Two Oceans winner and Nedbank RC teammate Lebenya Nkoka who was 12th in 2:13:39.

In the women’s race, all eyes were on Nedbank RC’s Gerda Steyn and she did not disappoint in what was her 3rd marathon of the year.  Steyn controlled the pace and almost acted as the unofficial pace maker in the ladies race, towing a group of 6 along, which included Nedbank RC teammates Aynalem Teferi and Sinke Biyadgilgn. Halfway was reached in 1:13:30 and the pace started to increase as Steyn started throwing surge after surge.

By 35km it was down to 4, but as the athletes made their way towards Sea Point and the finish, Kenya’s Lydia Simiyu threw a surge in that nobody could match. Teferi held on to finish 3rd in a lifetime pb of 2:26:09 as her Nedbank RC teammate Steyn crossed the line 4th in 2:26:22. Steyn also was crowned as the South African champion over the marathon distance.

After a disappointing performance in his own right at the Cape Town Marathon 46km trail run, Nedbank running club’s Eric Ngubane made amends with a total domination of the 3-day Golden Gate challenge run over 70km of beautiful yet challenging terrain in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park

November 2021

It was a long weekend to remember for Nedbank running club Cape Town’s Anthony Timoteus who not only recorded his first ever top 10 finish in a national championship on the road but was rewarded with a new 10km pb in the process when he finished 7th in 28:46 at the Absa Durban 10km which incorporated the SA 10km

championships. Irvette Van Zyl finished just outside the podium in 5th. Peter Muthubi who has run over 10 Comrades Marathon’s took the SA veteran title in a lifetime best of 30:08.

After dominating the 2021 Spar Grand Prix series and taking 6 victories out of 6 races, Tadu Nare went into her debut marathon at the Zurich Marathon Barcelona with one goal in mind. To run a time of 2 hours and 24 minutes. Not only did Nare achieve that by running 2:23:53, but she broke the course record and won in the process! Nare definitely has a big future ahead of her and it was a proud moment as the Nedbank RC family watched from all over the World as Nare broke the tape in her green Nedbank Nike kit.

Later that same day and on the other side of the World, Helalia Johannes finished a very credible 5th place in the New York Marathon which is one of the 6 World Marathon Majors.
