Track & Field

World Athletics U20 championships in Nairobi - feedback from Tracey Olivier

What an amazing trip, experience and opportunity for three of Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark members.

The team management was made up of two of our club members: Sabata Kumalo and Tracey Olivier, who were the Team Leader and Team Manager respectively.

Jason Bowers, represented the country in the 3000m.  It was an incredibly tactical race and Jason held his own and end in 11th place.

The team left on Sunday, 15 August. Many protocols and procedures were in place which would normally not have existed and these while they were challenges, were also an experience. The first issue that the team had to face was that the program was reduced from six days to five days. This meant psychological adjustments had to be made.

From the minute the team landed, we were escorted everywhere. As we disembarked from the plane, in Nairobi, we were met by the LOC and had to produce our first Covid-19 test results and QR Codes (electronical uploaded results.) This in itself was a task. We eventually exited the airport, escorted by the miltary police, to the bus. We boarded the bus and left our last bit of freedom behind. From there we were escorted to our first Covid Test and later the Sarova Stanley Hotel.

Every 48 hours we had to go for a COVID-19 test. This was a new experience every time as the medical staff kept changing and you never knew how far up your nose the stick could actually go! Having survived this mean you lived another day to enjoy the delicious food at the hotel. We were fed and treated like royalty. This was definitely a contributing factor to the outstanding performance of the team.

The hotel was stunning, with unbelievable hospitality. We were instantly made to feel at home, gratefully so, because this became our bubble of residence for the next week. To ensure our safety, no one was let in or out of the hotel without getting on an assigned bus to go to the track. Fortunately, we did get to mingle with other countries as we shared the hotel with the likes of Namibia, Bahamas, Czech Republic, Romania and Greece Every trip taken was nerve wrecking as we were escourted everywhere, meaning every other road users had to magically disappear off the road, making way for the buses.

The stadium was stunning. Spectators were missed but the athletes ensured that the athletics was fantastic. South Africa won 9 medals, a World record, three African records and five National records. It is exhilarating to see the depth of talent under  our junior athletes. It means that we have a very bright future in South African Athletics.

Thank you to Athletics South Africa for this amazing opportunity and we look forward to U20 World Championships in Cali, 2022.
