This past weekend across South Africa, from the streets of Tshwane to the trails of Langebaan, the Nedbank Running Club athletes delivered a host of podium finishes and standout performances
The ABSA Run Your City Tshwane 10K was the highlight event of the weekend, featuring top-level competition and a nail-biting finish. In the men’s race, Aklilu Asfaw secured 2nd place in 29:01, missing the win by just 0.01 seconds. He was followed closely by teammate Abdilmejid Mohammed in 3rd with 29:10, Namakoe Nkhasi in 8th at 29:37, and Joel Mmone in 10th with 29:55. In the women’s race, Selam Gebre claimed a strong 3rd place in 33:05, with Florence Nyaingiri finishing 10th in 35:30.
At the Wanderers Road Race with Discovery Vitality, in the 21km event, Tiisetso Mokhoma stormed to victory in 1:09:07, while Jeannie Henderson placed 10th among the women in 1:36:54. Over the 10km distance, Kabelo Melamu claimed 1st place in 32:21, with Promise Msitshana securing 10th in 34:36.
In the Cross the Line Half Marathon in Middelburg, Nedbank dominated the women’s 21.1km as Kate van Jaarsveld claimed 1st place in 1:27:33 followed by teammate Jackoline Brough in 2nd with 1:42:33. On the 10km route, Fransune du Toit finished 3rd in 45:50, while Gerald Snell placed 10th in 47:19.
“The Cross the line half Marathon was tougher than what I thought it would be. I didn't think Middelburg had so many hills. Crossing the finish line in first place brings a rush of pride and joy, knowing that every training run, every challenge, and every ounce of effort has paid off. It’s not just about being faster than others, but about pushing past your own limits, staying strong when the race gets tough, and proving to yourself that you are capable mentally of not stopping.” - Kate van Jaarsveld
The Eye Can Walk 10km saw Benjamin Nyongesa run to victory in 30:15.
At the Clearwater Mall Race, Kabelo Melamu secured his second win of the weekend with a 1st-place finish in the men’s 21km, crossing the line in 1:08:50.
Over the cross-country terrain at the ACNW Championships, Adele Broodryk delivered a commanding performance to claim 1st place.
“What turned out as a family outing and encouragement for my son to invest in running, turned out to be my comeback! Did cross country 10 years ago, and decided to use it as a base to build back my strength and speed after sustaining a severe conjoint hamstring tendon injury twice. Super happy about my progress, and ending on the podium as the Central North West champ is the icing on the cake. I am loving the journey back to fitness, with my love for running stronger than ever before."
In the Langebaan Half Marathon, Lloyd Bosman placed 3rd in 1:06:35. Reflecting on his race, Bosman shared: “Langebaan was a great experience and a valuable learning curve for me. Traveling and then racing the next morning definitely tested me, and straight after the race I headed back home to George to continue training, with a 40km long run scheduled for Sunday. The conditions on the day were excellent, and I’d love to return next year. The course includes a tough climb known as the ‘Black Mamba,’ which makes it a real challenge — but I enjoy tough routes as they prepare me well for races like Two Oceans. I led the race for the first 4km before settling in and holding on for 3rd place in a strong, competitive field. It’s always a privilege racing in the Western Cape.” In the women’s race, Rolandi Schutte delivered a solid performance, finishing 4th overall.
From quick 10km sprints to half marathon races and cross-country wins, the Nedbank Running Club continues to showcase depth, strength, and consistency across all disciplines. Congratulations to all our athletes who represented the Green Dream this weekend.
