There is not much going on in soccer crazy
South Africa at the moment, but overseas René Kalmer, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Peter van der Westhuizen ran brilliant races in recent days.
Kalmer was outstanding in two disciplines, first clocking a PB 8:44.17 for 3000 m in France, and then jetting across the Atlantic Ocean to run 32:32 in the New York Mini 10 km four days later. Her track time moves her up to third on the SA all-time list behind two of South Africa’s greatest stars, Elana Meyer (8:32.00) and Zola Pieterse (8:35.72).
Her road time is just 4 seconds slower than her PB and by far the fastest by a South African this year. On the all-time list for this event she also trails only Meyer, Budd and Colleen de Reuck. - Credit to Riel Hauman for this statistics.
Another Green Dream Team athlete, Juan Van Deventer will be competing overseas for the next couple of weeks. He will start his overseas campaign in America on the 3rd of July after which he will travel to Europe for 2 races and then to Kenya for the African Championships. There after he will go back to Europe for the Commonwealth games.
Pio Mpolokeng, our development coach in the North West Province are reporting that one of our top junior athletes Joel MMone will be running the 5000 meter race on Saturday in Cape Town to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Canada in August 2010.He has to dip under 14minutes and 15 seconds to qualify for the championships and according to Mpolokeng it will be a formality for this talented youngster.
Except for the athletes competing in the South African 21km. Championships, a number of top athletes will be lining up in Phalaborwa for the Phosphate 21km. race on the 24th of July 2010 which offers a big prize purse to the top 10 men and woman finishers.

On the local front the bulk of the athletes have a choice between all the Provinces Cross Country league races to choose from to get them in top shape for the South African Championships in September later this year.
On the local road racing scene there is not a big variety to choose from as a result of the restrictions placed on events that are falling in the region where the Soccer World cup events is taking place.
With the sudden cold front and snow in our country this is the ideal time of the year to get into the gym and start doing some strength training, especially all the Comrades athletes that have done hundreds of miles on the road in their built up to the race.
When Spring comes you can add a little bit of speed training and try to run a PB on the shorter distances.
