Nedbank Running Club Vaal Triangle's Joseph Mputhi wins Loskop Ultra Marathon

The Forever Resorts Loskop 50 kilometre Ultra Marathon celebrates 25 years and provides a winner for the Nedbank Team.

Olympic gold medallist Joshia Thugwane had a point to prove when he lined up at the start of the Forever Resorts Loskop Marathon in Middleburg last Saturday. The Nedbank Running Club stalwart wanted to show the young guns that he still had it in him and he could win an ultra marathon. This proved a road too far for the champion when he was forced out of contention by a stomach ailment. By the 27th kilometre marker he was a spent force leaving the door open for Joseph Mphuthi.

"My hero is Josiah because he was the first South African to win gold at the Olympic marathon," said Mphuthui. "I wanted to do well against him, but he did not finish the race," Mphuthi was buoyant - "I had a very good race and led from start to finish. There was no time at all that anyone was a threat to me," said the man from Boipatong, in the Vaal area.

"I know myself and was determined that if anyone was going to beat me, he would have to faint or I would at the end," said a happy Mphuthui who led from start to finish, winning in a time of 2:50:09.

Second place went to a fast finishing Marco Mambo three times winner of the Two Oceans. Mambo didn't have it all his own way and looked as if he would have to settle for third place when Doctor Mtsweni passed him and opened a gap of 200m. Matters were settled on the killer Faraday's Hill when the statuesque figure of Mambo blistered past Mtsweni to claim back second place. "I was having problems with my calf muscles and had to take things easy or else I would be injured," said Mambo who is preparing for Comrades next month.

Third across the line was Mtsweni, This was his second Loskop Ultra; he last ran in 2002 and was unplaced.

René Kalmer wins again

René Kalmer, the Nedbank Brand Ambassador for road running and a member of the Nedbank Central Gauteng club, led from start to finish in the fine running conditions as she made it four wins in four years and seven overall at the Western Cape leg of the Spar Women's Challenge 10 km series, which started at the Bellville Stadium. The event saw a record combined field of 16 520 entries in the ten and five kilometre races.

Kalmer crossed the line in 33:25 to win. Tanith Maxwell of the Boxer Stores club in KwaZulu-Natal in 34:03 was second and former Capetonian Thozama April was third in 34:42. Now running in the colours of Transnet Gauteng North. The Nedbank Running Club dominated the top ten, with Mpho Mabuza running seventh, Irvette van Blerk eighth and Maraliise Retief in ninth.

Kalmer immediately shot away from the pack to clock the first kilometre in 3:03, but unsurprisingly, she slowed in the second uphill kilometre, running a 3:45 split, which allowed Maxwell to close the gap. They stuck together until the five kilometre mark, reached in 17:09. Kalmer then steadily pulled clear on the uphill section along Charl Cronje Drive, up to the turn point at Willowbridge Mall. From here, the race was won as Kalmer slowly opened the gap to win by a comfortable 38 seconds.

After the race, Kalmer explained that the firing of the gun took the runners by surprise. "We were still dancing to the music when it went off and fortunately I got a bit of a flying start with the surprise, but I expected the rest to catch me up again. Luckily Tanith caught me and we ran together for a while, but at 5km I broke clear again and went for the win." She went on to add "I'm really enjoying the short stuff at the moment and been real surprised that my speed has returned so quickly this year. I'm hoping to qualify for the 1500m and 3000m at the Commonwealth Games real soon."

Kalmer has been in blistering form this year, having recently set three national records in indoor track events in Europe, as well as setting a new course record for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon just two weeks before this latest win." The Western Cape race was the first leg of the national series of Spar Women's Challenge races, with four further races in Port Elizabeth, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg to follow between May and October.

Thanks to Mark Etheridge & Patrick Baransky for this article about the fabulous René Kalmer.
Keep working out those running shoes!
