Nedbank GREEN DREAM TEAM successful at the OLD  MUTUAL OM DIE DAM ultra marathon.

The ultra marathon athletes of the Nedbank Running Club proof to follow in the footsteps of their shorter distance team mates with the running of the first major ultra marathon,OM DIE DAM 50km.,thislast Saturday 20th March 2010.

The majority of the athletes used this race as a tester for the Comrades marathon to see where they stand in their preparations for the most prestigious Ultra marathon in the world.

The first name to spring to my mind will be Lucas Nonyana, two times Gold medalist in his two outings in the Comrades marathon.

As he was the winner of the OM DIE DAM race last year he went out to win again and was running on record pace for half of the race. As a group of runners broke away from him on the 25km. mark he kept his pace and went through the 40km.mark-10km. to go -still in 10th position but he finished strong in 4th position and ran 1 minute faster than when he won the race the previous year. This is an indication that we can expect a great run from him in the 2010 Comrades marathon.

Nedbank running Clubs and short distance star, Enoch Skosana , put in the first major performance of his newly ultra running career with a second position.

The Nedbank GREENN DREAM LADIES TEAM came out tops in winning the team competition with Lesley Train spearheading the team with a second spot followed by Gold Medalist, Kashmira Purboo in 5th and Anita `O'Brien ,on her comeback race, in tenth.

In the 21km. the Nedbank runners took 50 % of the top 10 positions on offer.

As special note has to make of Peter Muthubi with his 4th position in 66minutes on a tough course. Peter is in top shape for next weeks Two Oceans marathon (56km.)

HELL OF A MIDNIGHT RUN!

Kym Rolfe, Eddie Mouton and Elmari Booysen (left to right) pictured at the start of the gruelling race in The Hell.

Three of the Nedbank Athletics Club members decided to take on an arduous challenge which most people would want to avoid - running the The Hell in the Swartberg Pass between Oudtshoorn and Prins Albert! Kym Rolfe, Eddie Mouton and Elmari Booysen were escorted down The Hell with other runners and had to run / walk the 38km adventure race back up with no support, refreshment points or anybody cheering on. All they had were their back packs with water, peanut butter with honey for energy, head lights and the full moon rising over the Swartberg Mountains. The race was limited to 100 runners due to the accessibility of The Hell.

The philosophy of the race is to allow participants to experience the ghosts of Hell as they wind their way through the Gamkaskloof. This year, the three beat the ghost to Elmari's disappointment as she was in desperate need to change legs with the ghost!

The route is done on a gravel road that best suites for 4x4 vehicles. It is almost uphill all the way. From the start the participants faced a steep uphill for about 10km, then a slight downhill for two kilometres, before reaching another 26km up and up and more uphill. The first section of the race is done at a speed of no more than 12minutes per kilometre!

Eddie and Elmari was crazy enough to have completed the Cango 42.2km earlier on the same day and had a few hours rest without any sleep before taking on The Hell.

Nedbank runners are encouraged to participate in this event in 2011, which is a once in a lifetime experience.

The route is recommended for 4x4 vehicles only.until runners came along. The To Hell and Back route is also done once a year by cyclists who do the route down and up over two days, staying over in The Hell.

Latest Nedbank Brand Ambassador set to Make Things Happen

Nedbank has built a reputation as a leading sport sponsor over a number of years and the bank's extensive investment in sports has made it synonymous with a number of sporting properties.

As a bank that cares and makes a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates, the exposure gained through these sponsorships also contributes to the goodwill and awareness in the minds of the general public. In short the sponsorships demonstrate how Nedbank makes things happen.

Nedbank announced the introduction of brand ambassadors in 2007 and ambassadors are identified as individuals who possess and demonstrate the highest integrity and credibility and are regarded as South African role models in their respective activities and communities as well as by the general public at large. The bank's initial ambassadors were; world renowned Paralympian; Oscar Pistorius, ladies golfer; Ashleigh Simon and legendary athlete Hendrick Ramaala.

After serving the brand with distinction it was decided to replace the Ashleigh, Oscar and Hendrick with a new crop of ambassadors who were unveiled at 135 Rivonia Road earlier today.

Following an exemplary term as an ambassador, Hendrick Ramaala's very fleet-footed shoes have been filled by an incredibly able replacement and fellow list leading athlete, René Kalmer.

René's currently competes under the Nedbank Running Club banner and her career highlights include;

Winning the both the SA Junior and Senior SA 1500m titles, Cross Country and SA 10km titles all in one year at the age of 16.
Ranked the number one junior in the World over 1500m (4:09.86min) in 1998.
32 South African Senior and Junior titles in track and field, Cross Country and Road running to date.
Represented South Africa at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China in the 1500m.
Winner of her first marathon, the 2009 Nedbank Soweto Marathon in a new course record (2h44:06).

Oscar Pistorius is replaced by fellow Paralympian, Hilton Langenhoven who will be competing at the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled from 27 to 30 March.

Hilton's career highlights:

 Holder of four world records,
o Pentathlon,
o Long Jump (7.43m
o 100m 10.89s
o 200m 21.94s
2002 World Championships in France - Silver in the javelin event.
2004 Paralympic Games in Athens - Silver in the long jump.
2006 Commonwealth Games - silver in the 100m.
2006 African Championships - Gold in the javelin and long jump
2006 World Championships in Holland - Gold in the long jump.
2008 Beijing Paralympic Games - 3 Gold medals - pentathlon, long jump, 200m.
Hilton is also the torch bearer for the 2010 Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled after being named 2009 Face of Sport for the Disabled at the 2009 Nedbank National Champs

Join me in welcoming Hilton and Rene to the Nedbank family. I am confident that they will fly the Nedbank flag with pride in the months to come.

Regards,
Andy Scott
