Nedbank Running Club's athletes broke records abroad.  February 2010

The Nedbank Running Club GREEN DREAM TEAM athletes, Juan Van Deventer and Rene Kalmer broke two long standing South African Indoor track records in Europe.

Juan Van Deventer won the 3000 meter race in the indoor meeting in Moscow in a time of  7minutes 49,91 seconds and in the process broke the long standing record of Sydney Mare of 7min 54,91 sec. as well as the track record in Moscow.

Rene Kalmer clocked a fast 3000meter in Stuttgart  where she ran 9minutes 2,92 seconds and breaking the 19 year old South African Record that was set by Michelle Dekkers  9min 07,87 in Indianapolis in 1990.

Rene Kalmer went on to brake the indoor 5000 meter South African record in Stockholm later this week when she clocked 15min.45, 40 seconds for this distance.

These brilliant performances were on the back of a series of record breaking performances by the two training partners, Rene and Juan Van Deventer, with their overseas athletic campaign participating in the European indoor series.

Both these athletes are being coached by Gerrie Coetzee in the West of Johannesburg.

Tsamano Setone broke Provincial 5000 meter Record.

Top Nedbank Green Team member , Tsmano Setone broke the 25 year old 5000 meter record of Hoseah Tjale when he clocked 13min.54,30 seconds for this distance at the CGA track championships on Saturday the 13th February 2010.

OLD MUTUAL OM DIE DAM MARATHON

ENTRIES OPEN FOR 20th OLD MUTUAL OM DIE DAM MARATHON

Entries are open for one of the biggest ultra marathons in the country, the Old Mutual Om Die Dam Marathon, which takes place in the North West Province on Saturday 20 March, starting and finishing at the Hartbeespoort High School in Schoemansville.

2010 sees this popular road running event celebrate its twentieth anniversary and the race office is expecting it to attract a record field of over 6 000 participants.

The event offers participants the flagship 50km ultra, the traditional 21km and 5km fun run/walk, and a new 10km run/walk which was introduced to celebrate the event's twentieth year.

"To commemorate this 20-year milestone and thank people for their support, runners will be issued with a special race T-shirt," said Joy Khaole, brand expression manager for Old Mutual.  She added that the race is regarded by the runners as one of the top events in South Africa and that it attracts competitors from around the country, including a number of foreign entries.

No postal entries will be taken so runners can either enter online at www.entrytime.com or enter at leading sports outlets in Johannesburg and Pretoria, including Runaway Sports and Running Inn in Pretoria, The Sweat Shop and Sportsman's Warehouse.  Entry forms are also available from the race office in Hartbeespoort.

Entries will be taken at all the major races in central and northern Gauteng.  Entries for the 21km, 10km and 5km fun run only will be taken at registration and on race day.  No entries will be accepted for the 50km ultra after the entry closing date of 7 March.

Runners must collect their race numbers at registration at the Hartbeespoort High School on Friday 19 March or on race day.  They are invited to bring their family and friends to registration as there will be a race expo with entertainment, food stalls and a beer garden, plus a Kids-Zone for the children.

The ultra, which starts at 06h00, takes runners around the Hartbeespoort Dam in Madibeng.  Walkers are welcome to take part and are eligible for prize money but they must be able to complete the ultra event within the seven hour cut off.

The 20 km starts at 06h15 and walkers are encouraged to enter this event where a cut off time of four hours applies.

Those who do not finish the 20 km within the cut off time can finish at their leisure but will not receive an official finishing time.

Although the ultra cut off time is seven hours, runners wanting to use the race as a Comrades qualifier, have to cross the finish line in six hours.

Race director Hannes Barendze said: "The continuous support this event receives from our sponsor Old Mutual is testimony to the significance of this ultra and this year's race fits in perfectly for those runners training for Comrades 2010."

Runners can contact the race secretary on 012-253 0252 or 078-765 2167 or email info@omdiedam.co.za.  For more information visit www.oldmutual.co.za/omdiedam or www.omdiedam.co.za.

The local Meerhof School is the event's official charity again this year and proceeds from the event will be donated to the school.

COMRADES MARATHON MEDIA RELEASE 2010/ 14

Entries Officially Closed for 2010

Entries for the 85th Comrades Marathon have officially closed.  This follows the final phase of entries that took place on Saturday 30 January 2010 when 2 000 spots were snapped up in just 4 and a half minutes. This was the final opportunity to enter for the 2010 Comrades Marathon.

The CMA would like to thank all runners for their enthusiastic response to the various entry phases. The response has been phenomenal with entries currently standing at +-23 000. An official figure will be released towards the end of February 2010, once all entries have been processed. With such a massive vote of confidence, the future of the Comrades Marathon is secured.

The CMA would also like to thank the Mr.Price Group, who as a Sponsor and Information Technology Partner continues to go beyond their obligations in order to support and assist the Comrades Marathon Association in their efforts to raise the performance and service delivery levels for the event. A special word of thanks and appreciation to the Management and staff of Mr.Price and all the retail outlets where entries were taken on 30 January.

The preparations for the 2010 race are way ahead of schedule.  This is mainly due to the determination of the CMA staff to deliver a world class event and to continuously raise the benchmark for event management and organization for events of this magnitude.

CMA Chairman, Dave Dixon stated that the CMA Board has been overwhelmed by the interest from local and international runners alike.  The incredible support the CMA is receiving from athletes, commercial partners, sponsors, host cities and government institutions and all relevant stakeholders augurs well for the future of the event. "The fact that we have received huge interest in this year's race, bodes well for the future of Athletics and the Comrades Marathon as a whole. The future looks bright," he said.

"The CMA Board believes in giving credit where credit is due, and the phenomenal success to date of the 2010 race must be attributed to the fantastic marketing campaign developed and implemented by the CMA Management and Marketing departments alike," said Mr. Dixon.

The CMA is aware of the many disappointed runners who have missed out on the opportunity to run the 2010 Comrades Marathon.  However, runners are advised to be on the alert for announcements about the opening date for entries for the 2011 Comrades Marathon in the near future.

The CMA invites the South African public to come out in their thousands to witness and join the CMA in this Guinness Book of Records attempt at being officially declared the biggest Ultra Marathon in the world!

THE ANATOMY OF RUNNING.

Running is a complex, highly coordinated process involving the entire body. While every runner has his or her somewhat unique style, key motions associated with running are common.

If you're looking to improve your running or just seeking to prevent running injuries it is important to follow the information in this article. In addition, making stretching a part of your fitness regime, along with sports massage treatment to aid recovery, this will have a significant impact on your overall results.

While running alone includes a wide range of competitive sports events, running ability is also a key ingredient in many other sports including football, soccer, rugby, basketball, tennis, cricket and many more, which is why running is usually part of the training regimen for most other sports.

Running is known to affect the mind as well as the body, with many runners reporting a post-run euphoria known as runner's high - believed to be the result of increased endorphin production in the brain, this in our pressurised environment today can only be a huge plus for us to do it regularly, and manage our mental and emotional attitudes.

Competitive running events vary by distance from very short sprints to marathons ultra marathons and multi-day events, trail and cross coutry. Running is engaged in for recreation, exercise and in strenuous competition worldwide.

Anatomy Involved
Proper running is executed as a sequence of strides, alternating between the two legs. Leg stride can be loosely divided into three phases: support, drive, and recovery. Support and drive refer to phases when the foot is in contact with the running surface. Recovery refers to the period when the foot is off the ground.

In the support phase, the contact foot supports the body against the force of gravity, with the body's centre of mass in the lower abdominal area between the hips. Just prior to the support phase, the knee joint is at its greatest extension, though when contact is made with the running surface, the knee joint begins to flex. The extent of knee flexion varies depending on the particular runner's style. As the supporting leg bends at the knee, the pelvis dips on the opposing side, acting to absorb shock.

Following the support phase, a transition to the drive phase takes place. At this point, the drive leg extends at the knee joint and hip, with the toe maintaining contact with the ground and the leg trailing behind the body. During the drive, the foot may extend through a flexing of the SOLEUS and GRASTOCNEMIUS muscles of the calf.

Once the driving toe loses contact with the surface, the recovery phase begins. Here, the hip flexes, rapidly driving the knee forward. (Forces transferred from the upper leg not by the action of the muscles, drive most of the lower leg's motion). As the knee kicks forward, torque is exerted against the lower leg via the knee joint.

In the last phase of recovery, the hip achieves maximal flexion. As the lower leg rapidly unfolds, the knee joint reaches its greatest extension. In the process of this extension of the leg and flexion of the hip, hamstring and gluteal muscles rapidly stretch, and reflexively respond to the stretch with sudden contraction. The recovery stage ends when the foot again comes into contact with the ground, beginning the support phase. During all three-stride phases, the upper body anatomy is also in use, in order to maintain balance and continue forward motion. At higher speeds, the arms, spine and shoulder often come into play, absorbing forces and helping to maintain balance.

Most Common Running Injuries
Runners are prone to a wide variety of both acute injuries and those resulting from overstress. The a high impact nature of the activity causes considerable stress to muscles, tendons and ligaments as well as making such athletes vulnerable to strains, sprains and fractures.
Some of the more frequently encountered injuries include:

- Runner's knee: also known as CHANDRAMALACIA, the condition results from a softening or wearing away of the cartilage under the kneecap, resulting in pain and inflammation

- ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME: The Iliotibial band is a sheath of connective tissue attaching muscles in the gluteal region to the outside (or lateral) surface of the tibia or shin bone. The band functions in extending the knee joint and abducting the hip

- SHIN SPLINTS: An inflammation of muscle attachments and interosseous membranes to the tibia or shin bone

When choosing running as your sporting discipline either recreationally, socially or competitively, understand it is the hardest on the body, it is in your interests to have an understand of the impact on the body. Support recovery and AVOID injury via following a program specifically attuned to YOU and your lifestyle, along with strong commitment to run specific strength training, cross training (not in place of a run session) and do regular deep tissue sports massage treatment.
