Comrades Entries to Reopen for 2010!

Due to the overwhelming response from previous Comrades Marathon Runners and Novices alike, the available 20 000 spaces for the 2010 Comrades Marathon were snapped up in record time. Since the close of entries was announced earlier this month, the CMA has been inundated with requests from runners to reopen entries.

After careful consideration and the weighing of appeals from hundreds of runners and interest groups, the CMA Board, after consultation with key stakeholders, decided to reopen entries for a limited number of 2 000 additional entries only. Entries will open on Saturday morning 30 January 2010 at 09h00 and will ONLY be accepted at Mr Price Clothing, Sport and Home Stores countrywide.  Entries will close as soon as 2 000 entries have been received. This means that if the 2 000 available spots are taken up within the first hour, entries will then close as and when the 2000 mark is reached. This is the FINAL ENTRY INTAKE and no further opportunities will be created after this period.

In order to work on a fair "first come first serve" basis, NO FAX, POSTAL OR ON-LINE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. Entries will also not be taken at Comrades House in Pietermaritzburg. The CMA therefore appeals to those runners who still wish to enter for the 2010 Comrades Marathon, to make sure that they are at a Mr. Price Store early on Saturday 30 January 2010. No correspondence will be entered into if runners miss this opportunity.

"This has not been an easy decision for the CMA, as we do not want to send mixed messages and signals to our runners or compromise the decision making process, but we do have an obligation to all the Comrades athletes and CMA stakeholders to ensure that the 85th Anniversary race is a true celebration, especially with the fantastic response to the "early entry initiative".  It is therefore that the decision was made to accept an additional 2 000 entries." Dave Dixon, CMA Chairman.

The CMA is dedicated to ensure that the 2010 Comrades Marathon adheres to all the required safety and quality standards and we believe that by extending the invitation to a further 2000 runners, this would not be compromised. The CMA Board has taken the following into account when the decision was made to allow a further 2000 runners to enter: based on statistics gathered over the last 10 years we have found an average attrition rate of +-10% from entry to starting line each year.  This is primarily due to factors such as when runners fail to qualify or pick up injuries or fall ill before the race.  Taking this expected attrition rate into account we expect to see approximately 20 000 runners lining up at the start on Sunday 30 May 2010. The Host Cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban, as well as the various Disaster Management structures within the local and provincial government structures have been alerted to the magnitude of the 2010 Comrades Marathon.

"One of the main reasons for limiting the field to 20 000 starters, was that during the millennium race in 2000, when 24 500 runners started the race, many runners complained about congestion on the route.  As a result, in order for all runners to have an enjoyable and safe race, the CMA decided to limit the participation in the 2010 Comrades under advisement from Disaster Management specialists." Gary Boshoff, CEO CMA.

The CMA wishes to thank all runners for their patience and understanding, and we look forward to celebrating the 85th running of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday 30 May 2010.

Nedbank Running Club proves to be a club for everyone

The Nedbank Soweto Marathon that took place on the 2nd of November just proves again that the Nedbank Running Club is a club for everyone; the contracted athlete as well as the social athlete that runs for the health, fun or enjoyment of the sport.

The club team competition was won by both the men's and the ladies teams from our Nedbank Running Club in Johannesburg.

The second club team's home, also in both categories, were their counterparts from the Nedbank Running Club in Tshwane.

But what is so amazing about this?

If you look at the results of the overall Ladies Club team competition you will see that two of our social and part time runners with full time jobs in the likes of Nomasonto Skosana and 5FM DJ Koula formed part of the winning team by anchoring the last two positions of the team in times of 4h03minutes and 4h41 minutes respectively.

The two Nedbank contracted athletes, Poppy Mlambo and Mpho Mabuza would not have been in this favorable position if it was not for the back up of the normal Nedbank runners. This again shows the value of filling in your details on the tear off strips or entry forms correctly. Congratulations to all of them for performing as a team and a unit and they will be rewarded with the races team prizes of R 2000-00 each for their brilliant performances.

We saw the same happening in the second club team's home, with the top athletes as well as the social athletes running as a team to the benefit of all of them. Ntombi Damane with a time of 5hours and 00 minutes anchoring the team and made sure they get their piece of cake (reward) as well as a bit of pride to be associated with a winning team.

The Nedbank running club also proves that it is a club for young and "experienced" members. It was not only in the senior rankings that we performed exceptional but our junior ladies took the first 5 positions in the Nedbank Soweto 10km event and our veteran ladies team was the third vet team home in the race - see results below.

For those who did not manage to get into the prizes, there was the Nedbank Running Club tent to treat them to a small meal and some drinks to celebrate their personal achievements.

I can say now with pride that everybody can feel at home with the Nedbank Running Club.

Randburg- Beijing Olympic 1,500m finalist, Juan van Deventer (Nike) continues with his tried and trusted build up for the international track season with his third victory in the RAC Tough One 32km clocking his fastest time to date 1 hour 43 minutes 33 seconds.

In near perfect weather conditions the 22 year old UJ B Com graduate ran almost uncontested for much of the tough loop around Johannesburg's northern suburbs.

"I was hoping to go a little faster but nobody wanted to race today. I don't know what's going on we have got to push harder if we want good times. Only Lucky (Mohale) stayed with me until 10 kilometres to go and even he dropped off the pace.

"My first race in 2007 was a 1:47, then last year I did a 1:45 so running a PB again gives me lots of hope for the World Indoor Champs in Doha (March) and the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi (October). I recon I could run under 1:40 at the coast but the last five kilometres of today's race was tough going," said the winner.

He was followed home by Mohale (1:44:55), Charles Tjiane (1:46:04) and Aaron Gabonewe (1:48:08).

The women's field was loaded with talent but in the repeat of the men's run nobody was prepared to go full out this late in the season. In the end it was Pretoria's Marelise Retief (Nedbank) who did enough to win in 2:03:33. Elizabeth Mtombeni (Matlakeng) is struggling to get away from Bridesmaid tag after finishing second in as many weeks ahead of Adinda Kruger (2:13:39) and her Nedbank teammate Irvette van Blerk who is struggling back to form clocking 2:16:11.

Triple Challenge

MultiX event - Kerry Koen was queen of the women's race arriving home in a time of four hours, forty-five minutes and 32 sec.

"The weather was perfect, cool and overcast, so what could have been a long, hard slog, was actually rather pleasant.  The first run section went well, the bike was hard but I managed to hang in there, and the second run was again good. Thanks to my running I was able to secure that top spot!"
