SIBUSISO NZIMA TRIUMPHS IN EUROPE

Sibusiso Nzima has begun his career at Nedbank Running Club in fine style with a series of excellent road running performances in the Netherlands.

The 22-year-old kicked off his recent overseas campaign with an inspiring third place in the Parnassia Laan v Meerdervoort Loop 10km on 1st November. Battling icy and windy conditions, he clocked a time of 29:07, just 13 seconds adrift of race winner, Abdelhadi El Mouaziz of Morocco. Kenya's Ezekiel Meli finished second in 28:58.

Two weeks later, Sibusiso ran the 26th Fortis Zevenheuvelenloop 15kms, where he finished sixth in a top class field, posting a personal best time of 44:15. The event, an IAAF Label Road Race, was won by Ethiopia's double Olympic 10 000m silver medalist, Sileshi Sihine, in a time of 42:14. He out-sprinted Nicholas Kiprono of Uganda (42:14) with Kenya's Abraham Rotich in third place (43:04). Sihine's compatriot Ayele Abshiro, the defending champion and World Junior Cross Country Champion, finished fourth in 43:10, just 65 seconds ahead of the Nedbank runner.

Sibusiso, the winner of this year's national 12km cross country title, is now setting his sights on making the final team for next year's IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland. He is one of eight Nedbank runners who have been selected for the provisional senior men's squad and is hoping to represent his country for the second consecutive year.

Ladies Running: SPAR Women's Challenge Grand Prix

Rene Kalmer, the winner of the Nedbank Soweto Marathon, returned from the World Half Marathon Championships in England to finish first in the SPAR Women's Challenge Grand Prix.

Going into the final event of the series Kalmer had built up an unassailable lead by winning the opening four races and accumulating an impressive 122 points.

Nedbank Running Club's Maxine Heine-Wacker, who still runs as a junior was second, with 100 points, followed by veteran runner Michelle Bartman of Harfield Harriers, with 96. Maxine's achievement was made all the more special as her Nedbank Running Club Central Gauteng team secured the prize for the Spar Grand Prix winning club of the year by the proverbial country mile. As impressive was the fact that the Nedbank Running Club had seven ladies in the top 20 prize winners.

The awards come on the end of a long running season and are evidence of Nedbank's success in nurturing South African athletes through the Nedbank Running Club. Congratulations to Maxine who shows the potential to be a leading light in women's road running for years to come.

Keep working out those running shoes!
