Nedbank Running Clubs in full swing for the 2010 running season.

The thirteen Nedbank Running Clubs countrywide are gearing themselves up to be ready for the throngs of runners that are expected to join the club for the 2010 running season.

With the 2010 Comrades Marathon entries closed and capped at the 20 000 mark already and many runners left without entries, the club expect that all the road races in the new year will have record entries as runners prepare themselves for various events and get in their mandatory qualifiers or training runs for the Comrades Marathon to be held on 30 May 2010.

To support this, South Africa's main backer of road running; Nedbank, remain committed to the sport in South Africa, and are especially pleased that their partnership with the Nedbank Running Clubs are cemented for 2010.

"Nedbank wish to assure you the runners, joggers and walkers that plans are already afoot to bolster the Nedbank Running Club experience.  Members and committees can look forward to our continued support and Nedbank are pleased to say that a fresh new vest design is due out in January," says Patrick Baransky; Sponsorship Portfolio Manager for Nedbank.

Nedbank have been especially pleased with the growth and collaboration of the Nedbank Running Clubs over the last 22 months for the benefit of thousands of participants across the country, many who depend on their greater involvement.

Nedbank is also a proud major sponsor of the Comrades Marathon.

Nedbank Athlete wins the IAU 50K World Trophy Final in Gibraltar.

Lucas Nonyana, of the Nedbank Running Club in Gauteng, has won the International Association of Ultrarunners' 50km Trophy Final, in a time of 2:58:04. Club mate Lesley Train was third in the women's competition. The race was held on 31 October 2009 in Gibraltar.

The Trophy Final is the culmination of a series of qualifying 50km races around the world, with the best 50km runners in the world being invited to the final race. The Old Mutual Om die Dam was the only South African qualifying race in 2009.

Despite struggling with visa and other logistical obstacles, the small South African contingent, which also included Butiki Jantjies, Steven Molepo and Hermans Mokgadi, performed exceptionally well at their first IAU event.

Nonyana, who won the Old Mutual Om die Dam 50km race in March this year to qualify for the final, ran shoulder to shoulder with Michael Wardian (USA), before breaking away on the last lap. Mokgadi (7th) and Molepo (26th) were close to the leaders for much of the race.

Nonyana has 2 gold medals in the Comrades marathon in his two previous down run outings and is gearing himself up for a top 3 finish in next years 85th running of the Comrades.

Lesley Train, this years runner-up at the Old Mutual Om die Dam, was in second place in the IAU final with 8km to go, but was passed by Monica Carlin (Italy) to finish third. The women's race was won by Kami Semich (USA), in 3:29:47. Semich, like Nonyana, headed the world 50km rankings going into the race.

ENTRIES FOR TOP CAPE EVENT NOW OPEN

Online entries are open for the country's biggest road running event, the 2010 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, which takes place on Easter Saturday 3 April.

Old Mutual recently confirmed that it has committed to sponsoring the event for a further three years.  Sponsorship manager for Old Mutual, Frank Brooks said:  "This is definitely a flagship event on the South African road-running calendar and over the years it has become a national institution and firm favourite with local, upcountry and international athletes."

He added that the fact that the event is open to everyone, with no barriers to entry, is a major reason for the financial services company choosing to support the world's most beautiful marathon.  "We invest a significant amount of thought, time and money into this event to ensure a truly memorable race day experience for all involved."

Due to a renewed interest amongst the ultra marathon running fraternity, participants are encouraged to get their qualifying marathon done as soon as they can and to submit their entry to avoid possible disappointment.  The qualifying window is 1 September 2009 to 3 March 2010.  Entries close on 3 March 2010 or when 11 000 entries for each distance are reached - whichever comes first.

Participants are encouraged to enter online at www.twooceansmarathon.org.za but can also pick up entry forms from leading sports shops and running clubs countrywide towards the end of November.

The race office is excited to announce that runners will be able to downgrade, upgrade, substitute or do seeding changes but that this will only be permitted during the week of 4 to 10 March 2010 and cost implications plus other conditions will be applicable.  Participants should visit www.twooceansmarathon.org.za for more details.

According to race director Rowyn James, the 2010 event will see the introduction of additional seeding pens with generous time batches for the half marathon.  "We have also introduced extra prize money for the grand and great grand masters, as well as the veteran and masters' team prizes."

South African entrants wanting to run the ultra marathon must belong to a running club and have a valid provincial licence number, as no temporary licences will be issued for the 56km event.

Title sponsor Old Mutual has once again put together a festival of events leading up to the main event on Easter Saturday.  These activities include a comedy festival featuring top local comedians, a family day of fun runs and activities at UCT on Good Friday and the Summer Sunset Concerts at Kirstenbosch.  The final concert will take place on Sunday 4 April and will feature a collaboration between Tidal Waves and Tumi Molekane.  To find out more visit www.oldmutual.co.za.
