Comrades Marathon 2019

Final days for #Comrades2019 Substitutions

With just a few days before the 2019 Comrades Marathon Substitution Process closes, the Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) Race Director, Rowyn James has urged aspirant #Comrades2019 athletes to get their applications in before Monday’s deadline of 15th April.

The Substitution Process allows for a runner who has not entered to substitute an entrant who has withdrawn or intends to withdraw from the 2019 Comrades Marathon.

James says, “We are anticipating a flurry of applications this week and are pleased to confirm that the Comrades Marathon Substitution Process has functioned smoothly thus far with nearly 1000 substitutions already successfully processed.”

James adds, “Plans are afoot for a phenomenal day of ultra-road running on Sunday, 9th June, for both our runners and supporters. Aspirant Comrades athletes are encouraged to get their applications in before the process closes.”

Athletes intending to submit Substitution application forms are advised to visit the official Comrades Marathon website at www.comrades.com for the downloadable forms and the comprehensive list of rules and regulations which govern the Substitution process.

Substitutions can only take effect on a like for like basis, meaning SA runners can only substitute for SA entrants, Rest of Africa (ROA) for other ROA runners and International runners for International entrants.

Prospective substitutes are encouraged to do their applications online. Alternatively, they may send their completed applications via email to sub@comrades.com or hand deliver them to Comrades House in Pietermaritzburg. Please do not post forms. Substitution applications cost R300,00.

Nedbank Running Club paints the roads green in Durban

The Nedbank running club green dream team this past weekend had a stellar showing in the Durban City Marathon where Sibusiso Nzima not only defended his title from last year but led a Nedbank 1-2-3-4 across the finish line.

“I’m very happy to win this race again and defend my title,” said Nzima after crossing the line in 2:21:10, a little over 5 minutes slower than last years winning time. “The conditions were good and I ran a great race tactically so the finish time is not the greatest but the win is all I wanted.” After going through halfway around 100 metres behind the lead bunch, Nzima put his foot down after 30km where he chased down Tshepo Mathibelle from Nedbank running club Lesotho and the Kzn duo of Mholi Jali and Sithembele Fanekho, both from the Nedbank running club. Going through 5km to go, Nzima was ahead by 15 seconds and held that through to the finish with a fast chasing Mathibelle ending 2nd followed by Jali and Fanekho.

In the accompanying 10km, Nedbank running club Lesotho’s Mamorallo Tjoka ran a very fast 33:37 to take victory. This run indicates that she is in great form ahead of next week’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon where she is running the 56km.

Internationally, Rutendo Nyahora from the Nedbank running club Zimbabwe ran a new personal best time of 2:34:49 to take 7th in the Vienna Marathon. Over in Hannover, Ntombesintu Mfunzi finished 13th in the Hannover Marathon running 2:48:53.

Mamabolo returns to the road

Former Comrades Marathon winner and multiple gold medallist Ludwick Mamabolo made a welcome return to the road after an injury plagued 2018 which saw him pull out of Comrades.

Running the Mall of the North Marathon, Mamabolo finished 3rd veteran in 2:41:49 in what was for him a comfortable run. “I can truly say that the run was great because it’s the first time I am running this distance and I don’t feel any pain,” Mamabolo said after the race. “It’s a crucial time now as its where the real Comrades training starts so I am looking forward to having a good April and May and be ready for Comrades.”

In the Allan Ferguson Half Marathon in Johannesburg, defending Two Oceans champion Gerda Steyn had a very comfortable victory over the hills winning in a time of 1:20:21, with green dream team athlete Cobie Smith 2nd in 1:26:58. All eyes will be on Steyn later this month to see whether she holds back at Two Oceans in an attempt to win Comrades or she goes for the double!
