Continued support of the Nedbank Running Clubs

In the current climate and in terms of its relationship with ASA, Nedbank is rightly concerned at the reputational risk factors that are at stake and has therefore suspended all talks of possible future sponsorships with ASA. Nedbank will continue to work with ASA in the delivery of scheduled events until end 2009 which includes the Nedbank Soweto Marathon.

Nedbank is keen to remain in running in South Africa, especially for the benefit of thousands of participants across the country who depend on our greater involvement.

To support this, we have been especially pleased with the growth and collaboration of the Nedbank Running Clubs over the last 20 months. It is satisfying to see the distinctive colours grace our roads, especially when our membership does themselves proud, be that at the front of races at events like the Comrades Marathon, this past weekend's Nedbank Cape Town Marathon and be that the elite runners or those club members simply aspiring to beat their personal bests or stay healthy. We can assure our partner; Nick Bester and all Nedbank Running Club members and your committees that you have our continued support and we have no intention to cease that partnership.

We look forward to building on that partnership, making a greater success and trust that members and stakeholders will support our investment.

ENTRIES FOR 2010 COMRADES MARATHON

As September draws to a close we are excited by the 7,777 entries received thus far and would like appeal to you to remind all your runners of the entry criteria.

Entries will be cut off at 20,000 runners, and no extensions will be entered into. We urge all runners and potential runners that wish to run in 2010 to take careful note of the entry process and the cut-off dates. We therefore urge you to enter early to avoid disappointment. Entries will be done in 2 phases.

PHASE 1: ENTRIES OPEN - 1 SEPTEMBER TO 31 OCTOBER 2009
On the 1st of September 2009 entries will open to all previous Comrades Runners ONLY. Phase 1 will be capped at 15,000 entrants and will close on 31st of October 2009 at 18h00, or whichever comes first (eg. if we receive 15,000 entries by the 10th of October 2009 then no further entries will be accepted for previous Comrades runners for 2010).To qualify as a "previous runner" you must have started in a previous Comrades Marathon, even if you didn't actually finish within the 12 hour time limit.

PHASE 2: CALLING ALL NOVICES - 1 NOVEMBER TO 30 NOVEMBER 2009
On the 1st of November 2009 entries will open at 09h00 to all Novices ONLY and will be capped at 5,000. Entries will close on 30 November 2009 at 18h00, or whichever comes first (eg. if we received 5,000 novice entries by 15th November 2009 then no further entries will be accepted).

No entries will be accepted after the cut off dates! No entries will be taken in 2010!

Qualifying period for 2010 will be as follows: 24 May 2009 to 26 April 2010.
Runners who finished the 2009 Comrades Marathon can use their finishing time as a qualifier for 2010. As in 2009, runners will be able to enter before they qualify. This means while all entries will have to meet the entry criteria above, runners will still be allowed to qualify in official qualifying races up until the month of April 2010, with the 26th April 2010 as the final cut-off date. Upon qualification, runners simply need to submit the time and details of the qualifying race through to the CMA office. Upon receiving the qualifying information the runner's entry will be confirmed.

Yours in running,

Nedbank Matha Series Marathon in Limpopo heading for a show down between Africa's star athletes.

The country's top marathon athletes are heading to Polokwane to compete for a total of R209 100.00 in prize money at the Nedbank Matha Series Half marathon in Limpopo on Saturday.

Nedbank's  generous sponsorship of incentives has motivated more SA runners to compete and win domestic races. The outstanding performance of 2h14 minutes and 20 seconds by George Mofokeng in the Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon this past weekend is a case in point, it is also the fastest time this year by a South African athlete on South African soil.

South Africa's Coolboy Ngamole, back from his efforts at the World Championships in Berlin, finished second in the Cape Town City Marathon and is ready for a top performance on Saturday in Polokwane. Ngamole will be joined by evergreen Nedbank Running Club team mates, Tshamano Setone and last year's South African 10km champion Boy Soke.

The ladies line up will see Irvette Van Blerk who show signs of getting back into top shape after her second place this past weekend in the City To City 21km, as well as Adinda Kruger, Comrades and Two Oceans gold medallist, and  Ndofhiwa Mandiwana who finished fifth in the Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon.

Top athletes from outside South Africa include the likes of Lewis Masunda, Wesley Ruto, Brighton Chipere and Jonothan Chinyoka.

Online entries are available at www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or hand entries on the day for the half marathon will close at least an hour before the race, and the entry fee is R40.00. To pre-enter online, log on to www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or call Leon Bannau of Limpopo Athletics on 082 455 7244 or Roelf Coetzee on 082 676 3350

Nedbank Limpopo Matha Series - Half Marathon & 5km Fun Run

JOHANNESBURG, TUESDAY, 29 SEPTEMBER 2009: Athletics South Africa (ASA)'s last half marathon race of the year, the Nedbank Matha Series returns to Polokwane in Limpopo this Saturday, 03 October.

"With its beautiful and contrasting landscape, South African runners will again have an opportunity at the Limpopo event to finalise their preparations for the flagship event of the Nedbank Series - the Nedbank Soweto Marathon, which will take place on the 1st of November 2009. We are looking forward to some more blazing performances on this relatively fast course, and happy to be returning to Polokwane for the 3rd time," said Patrick Baransky, Nedbank Sponsorship Manager.

The 21.1 km race starts at 07h00, while the 5km Fun Run begins at 07h15 at Van Riebeek Cricket Field in Suid Street.

This is also ASA's last half marathon tune-up event before the IAAF's World Half Marathon Championships, which will be held on 11 October 2009 in Birmingham, UK.

And according to ASA Events Manager, Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane, ASA and its partners have had breakthrough year of Matha Series events. "Performances in the 2009 Nedbank Matha Series have shown a marked improvement than in the previous editions. Similarly, participation figures have increased significantly during the current season.

"The introduction of incentives has seen more SA runners winning these races, including the outstanding performances in the national Nedbank SA Half Marathon Championships, where for the first time a full squad was selected for the World Champs in Birmingham," explains Mlangeni-Tsholetsane.

Hand entries on the day for the half marathon will close at least an hour before the race, and the entry fee is R40.00. To pre-enter online, log on to www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or call Leon Bannau of Limpopo Athletics on 082 455 7244 or Roelf Coetzee on 082 676 3350.
