Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon heading for a show down between Africa's star athletes.

Total prize money of R478 000 on offer at the Nedbank Cape Town City marathon is one of the reasons why the crop of the marathon athletes in South Africa as well as athletes from the rest of the Africa region are gearing up for this prestigious race. With time incentives of another quarter of a million rand expected to be announced by ASA soon, there is plenty at stake.

But this is not the only reason why marathon athletes across the continent are preparing to put their efforts into this race, as the route is designed in such a way that the athletes can expect to run world class times on this circular route, especially if the cape doctor doesn't blow .

Run in the heart of the mother city with views of the best natural & historic sites, the marathon starts in Adderley Street and the course is flat, easy and pleasant as runners head out of town eastwards through Salt River, to Mowbray before returning to the Foreshore and a unique run right through the V&A Waterfront. Onwards, along Mouille Point and Sea Point promenade with views of Robben Island, before a return finish in the city centre on the Grand Parade. For Joe average a generous 8hr cut-off applies.

The 10km event in the best of the best and includes the V&A Waterfront, Mouille Point and the City centre, truly a blistering quick and flat course with a 2hr cut-off.

Top South African male athletes that have entered the event include Nedbank Running club runners like Colin Khoza, Mzwanele Maphekula, Pule Hlabahlaba, Phillip Molefe and two times Nedbank S.A. marathon champion George Mofokeng. The Kenyan Paul Manwa as well as the seasonal Zimbabwe runner, Mike Fokoroni will also line up for the event.

South Africa's Coolboy Ngamole, back from his efforts in Berlin at the recent World championships in Berlin is also showing interest in the race, but it will probably be a bridge to soon after his 2h16min effort there, to expect from him to be amongst the top runners.

The ladies line up will see Tshifhiwa Mundalamo, who was the first S.A athlete home this year in the Nedbank S.A Marathon championships in Durban, trying to better on her 2h47minutes 05 seconds. She will be joined by club mates Ndofhiwa Mandiwana and Paulina Njeya. The Zimbabwean born athlete, Sharon Tavenga, is in great shape and she will be the favorite to beat on the day.

Online entries are available at www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or www.capetownmarathon.org.za close 18 September. Entrance fees: 42.2km - R65.00, 10km - R35.00.   The 5km  cost R10.00 and will be held on Saturday 26 September at 16:00 at Three anchor Bay.

Route Description:
quick and flat course.    2hr cut-off
Route Type: Circular
Oh Cape Town, how can any city in Africa be more beautiful? It is springtime in the fairest Cape of all. The re-designed course of 2007 is one of the flattest marathons on the South African calendar and is arguably the first truly global city-marathon experience in the country, full of potential, stunning beauty and big-city charm. Your personal best lies in this one.

The start is in Adderley Street and the course is flat, easy and pleasant as you run out of town eastwards through Salt River, Observatory, Liesbeek Park, Mowbray and around the Rondebosch Common. Onward, through Athlone and the leafy suburb of Pinelands on the broad and quiet roads, and past Old Mutual Park at the 19-kilometre mark. This is a good time to settle into an easy rhythm, check your drinking and think about breaking records today.

As you leave Pinelands in a westwards direction, you run back towards the foreshore via Woodstock and the City Bowl. The romance of the harbour, Africa's busiest seaport, comes and goes. Ahead, the historic, highly sought-after tourist destination, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront beckons.

By the time Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, tipped the first load of stone into the sea to start construction in 1860, the Mother City was a hive of seafront activity. Thanks to the discovery of diamonds and then gold in South Africa, the harbour had to be expanded. The Victoria Basin was added to the Alfred Basin. This is a heritage site that retains the charm of Victorian industrial architecture, a time when sail and early steam passed by on their way to the East.

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureates statue features to the side of the route. Take a deep breath here, and drink in the pride of our nation. Thank our men of peace. Now it's back to the business of the marathon. Watch the clock as you cross the Clock Tower Bridge. Don't spend too much time at one of the many pubs and restaurants as the route takes you out under the Table View Hotel at 32-kilometres. The distance starts to bite now as you run onwards to the Eastern Pier and Granger Bay. The course remains flat and easy along Beach Road, with the smell of the sea giving you renewed energy, along the promenade through Mouille Point, past the lighthouse and on to Three Anchor Bay.

Three Anchor Bay is nestled at the foot of Signal Hill, with wide lawns and a sweeping view of the cold Atlantic. Out to sea shimmers Robben Island, that infamous home to political prisoners in years past. The promenade takes the scenic route to Sea Point as you check your time and think of your goal, a PB. For in truth, the race is drawing to an end. A quick swing for home and the last two downhill kilometres will propel you to the end of this most memorable marathon. The finish line is in Darling Street, in front of Cape Town's historic City Hall, where former President Nelson Mandela gave his famous Freedom Speech in February 1990. Take a drink and relax on the lawns of the Cape Castle. The beauty of it, the feel of it; a marathon in Cape Town. Bliss.
