Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon heading for a show down between Africa's star athletes.

Total prize money of R478 000 on offer at the Nedbank Cape Town City marathon is one of the reasons why the crop of the marathon athletes in South Africa as well as athletes from the rest of the Africa region are gearing up for this prestigious race. With time incentives of another quarter of a million rand expected to be announced by ASA soon, there is plenty at stake.

But this is not the only reason why marathon athletes across the continent are preparing to put their efforts into this race, as the route is designed in such a way that the athletes can expect to run world class times on this circular route, especially if the cape doctor doesn't blow .

Run in the heart of the mother city with views of the best natural & historic sites, the marathon starts in Adderley Street and the course is flat, easy and pleasant as runners head out of town eastwards through Salt River, to Mowbray before returning to the Foreshore and a unique run right through the V&A Waterfront. Onwards, along Mouille Point and Sea Point promenade with views of Robben Island, before a return finish in the city centre on the Grand Parade. For Joe average a generous 8hr cut-off applies.

The 10km event in the best of the best and includes the V&A Waterfront, Mouille Point and the City centre, truly a blistering quick and flat course with a 2hr cut-off.

Top South African male athletes that have entered the event include Nedbank Running club runners like Colin Khoza, Mzwanele Maphekula, Pule Hlabahlaba, Phillip Molefe and two times Nedbank S.A. marathon champion George Mofokeng. The Kenyan Paul Manwa as well as the seasonal Zimbabwe runner, Mike Fokoroni will also line up for the event.

South Africa's Coolboy Ngamole, back from his efforts in Berlin at the recent World championships in Berlin is also showing interest in the race, but it will probably be a bridge to soon after his 2h16min effort there, to expect from him to be amongst the top runners.

The ladies line up will see Tshifhiwa Mundalamo, who was the first S.A athlete home this year in the Nedbank S.A Marathon championships in Durban, trying to better on her 2h47minutes 05 seconds. She will be joined by club mates Ndofhiwa Mandiwana and Paulina Njeya. The Zimbabwean born athlete, Sharon Tavenga, is in great shape and she will be the favorite to beat on the day.

Online entries are available at www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or www.capetownmarathon.org.za close 18 September. Entrance fees: 42.2km - R65.00, 10km - R35.00.   The 5km  cost R10.00 and will be held on Saturday 26 September at 16:00 at Three anchor Bay.

NZIMA BEATS MOKOKA FOR SENIOR CROSS COUNTRY TITLE

JOHANNESBURG, MONDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER 2009: Sibusiso Nzima of Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) underlined his talent when he walked away with the Senior Men's 12km title, at the South African Cross Country Championships which were held at the University of Pretoria's sports grounds on Saturday, 12 September.

Central Gauteng's athletes had very successful Championships, and apart from winning several individual titles dominated the team competitions.

Nzima who finished ninth in last year's Championships, and who has been making steady progress in the longer distances since, had a ding dong battle with on form Stephen Mokoka, and managed to out sprint his rival over the last 50 metres to the finish line. Mokoka, as was the case last year, finished with the silver medal while Jeffrey Gwebu won the bronze medal.

Tebogo Masehla (CGA) mastered the course best in the women's race over 8 km to upset the pre race favourites and won the gold medal in convincing style. She was followed home by her team mate Lebogang Phalula and Annerien van Schalkwyk (AGN) third.

Last year's runner up in the junior boys race over 8km, Folavia Sehohle (CGA), gained sweet revenge when he walked away with the title followed by Central Northwest's Joel Monne and CGA's Vuyisile Tshoba.

Central Gauteng walked away with another individual title when Sylvia Tshetlanyane crossed the line first in the junior women's race over 6km. Gauteng North's Letitia Saayman came homer second followed by Annika Claassens (AMPU).

In the men's  4km races, Lloyd Bosman (CNW ) won the  senior men's title, Witness Hlalale (AVT) the under 21 and  Tshamano Setone the under 23 titles. The women's titles went to Annah Moeketsi (AFS) in the senior women category, Mia Pienaar (Boland) in the under 21 race and Dolores Bondis (AFS) in the under 23 event.

Merlin Klaaste (SWD) won the title in the boys 17 years 6 km race with Unathi Phezolo (WPA) victorious in the 16 year event.

Caroline Marandela (CGA) crossed the line first in the girls 16 years 4km race while Boland's Dominique Scott proved too strong for her opponents in the 17 year race.

Central Gauteng scooped the team prizes in the  Senior men 12km,  Senior women 8km, Junior men 8km, Junior women 6km, Senior men 4km, men  23 years 4km , men  21 years 4km, Boys 16 years 6km, Boys 17 years 6km, Senior women 4km and women 23 year 4km  competitions.

ATHLETICS SOUTH AFRICA ANNOUNCES TEAM FOR IAAF WORLD HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

JOHANNESBURG, MONDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER 2009: Athletics South Africa (ASA) today announced a team of six men and three women for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships which will be held in Birmingham, England, on 11 October.

The men's team will be finalized at a later stage as only five runners are allowed to start the Championships.

The team was selected after the very successful Nedbank SA Half Marathon Championships in Port Elizabeth when runners produced some of the best times seen for a long time in the country.  The provisional team selected then competed in the Nedbank SA 10km Championships in Stellenbosch recently to prove their fitness.

The other members of the six man group are Mbongeni Ngxazozo (CGA), Xolisa Tyali (CGA) and Olebogeng Masire (ACNW).

The women's team consists of SA Champion, Annerien van Schalkwyk (AGN) and Rene Kalmer and Poppy Mlambo both from Central Gauteng.

Race Walking Identification Tags

On behalf of the ASA I would like to bring to your attention the Rule 20.1.1 which states as follows

During Road Races, which accepts walkers, all walkers must wear a "WALKER" tag to indicate they are walkers to be eligible for awards

It has come to our attention that Provinces apply this rule differently to the confusion of the athletes. In some provinces a "W" tag is acceptable, and on other provinces the technical officials insist on a "WALKER" tag. There is also no standers size/format for the tags or a prescribed position on the athletics attire.

All ASA rules will be looked at in the next 6 months, and as an interim measure Provinces are requested to allow any one of the identification tags, mentioned above, at event under their jurisdiction

I thank you for your kind cooperation.
