Comrades 2010 ANNOUNCEMENT

The overwhelming response for entries for the 2009 Comrades Marathon is hopefully a sign of the excellent interest in the Comrades Marathon.

The 17% increase in race entries this year must be attributed to the extensive marketing campaign undertaken by the CMA, both locally and abroad.

The 2010 Comrades Marathon also coincides with the 85th anniversary of The Ultimate Human Race. 2010 will see the race run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, a down run. The CMA will enter into an extensive marketing campaign, through various mediums, as well as road shows across South Africa. The CMA has also put in place a comprehensive international marketing campaign, the first step of which has been achieved with the appointment of International Ambassadors across Europe, South and North America, and Australia.

Entry numbers for the 2010 and 85th anniversary of the Comrades Marathon will be capped at 20000 runners, and no extensions will be entered into. Thus making the 2010 run a special event as the CMA has never had a cut off number in the past. We are confident that this number will be achieved very quickly as in 2000 we received 24000 entries. Therefore we urge all runners and potential runners that wish to run in 2010 to take careful note of the entry process and the closing dates. We therefore request that you enter early to avoid disappointment. Entries will be done in 2 phases.

Phase 1

1 September 2009 entries will open to all previous Comrades Runners. Phase 1 will be capped at 15000 entrants and will close on 31 October 2009, or whichever comes first (eg. if we receive 15000 entries by the 10 October 2009 then no further entries will be accepted).

Phase 2

1 November 2009 entries will open to all Novices and will be capped at 5000. Entries will close on 30 November 2009, or whichever comes first (eg. if we received 5000 novice entries by 15 November 2009 then no further entries will be accepted).

Total number of entries will be capped at 20000.

Qualifying period for 2010 will be from 24 May 2009 to 26 April 2010. Runners who finished the 2009 Comrades Marathon can use their finishing time as a 2010 qualifier.

As in 2009, runners will be able to enter before they qualify. This means while all entries will have to meet the entry criteria above, runners will still be allowed to qualify in official qualifying races up until the month of April, with the 26th April as the final closing date. Upon qualification, runners simply need to give the time and details of the qualifying race through to the CMA office. Upon receiving the qualifying information the runner's entry will be confirmed.

Failure to meet or submit your qualify details will result in your entry being rejected and your details will be removed from our database, which means that you will not receive a postcard, goodie bag or runners t-shirt. Under no circumstances will refunds be made.

Race Day for 2010 Comrades Marathon is Sunday 30 May.

Cross Country at Innovation Hub

Thanks for another great cross country event this weekend! 620 athletes took part in the event hosted by Enduro club at the Innovation Hub.

Our province is really blessed to have the support that we receive from the City of Tshwane metro council. No doubt that you would have seen some new kids on the block at Saturday's event. Thanks to the combined efforts of the city council, the department of Education and AGN, we have found some uncut diamonds with enough talent to go right to the top!

The Gauteng North Cross Country season is preparing to go into its final lap now and the standard of performances is improving dramatically every weekend. The time has arrived to start biting the bullet!!

We hope to announce the team to Newcastle on Friday morning, before the schools close. I am sure that the selectors will have a tough time identifying this team with so many great performances over the last five events. I will forward you more detail as soon as I have it.

Event 6, Innovation Hub (Enduro) (20 June 2009)

Well done to the Enduro team for hosting the second largest league ever without a glitch. It is because of the high standard of the events hosted by our clubs that the sport is growing so much.

Our sincerest gratitude goes to Mr. Jackie Kunene of the City of Tshwane and his department (Ria, Khomotso, Trudie) for providing us with transport and infrastructure to give opportunities to 120 athletes.  Your efforts are paying dividends already. Also, thank you to the coordinators of the School districts, Mr. David Moses and Mr. Tshepo Moroke for the communication to the schools.

I have not worked out the results of the league competition yet. Like last year, the champions will be crowned at the Gauteng North championships on 15 August 2009.

Results attached.

Old Photographs
82 days remain before the South African Cross Country Championships. The event will include an Expo this year. We would like to request anyone who might still have some old photos taken at the South African championships a few years ago, to borrow it to us so that we may take copies of it to display at the expo.

Place keeping on the starting line
Please note that we are not allowed to stand on the starting line to reserve a place for our children while they are warming up. It is creating tension amongst parents. We would not like to have to start policing our events. We appreciate your understanding.

The Rest of the season

In the third stage, things become a little more complicated. In our drive to combine AGN and school events we will split our events into two groups:

·       Primary school athletes (Ages 8 to 13).

To qualify for the South African Cross Country championships, athletes have to take part in at least three of the following events of which the Gauteng North Cross Country championships is compulsory:

Tuine Primary School (31 July 2009)
Simon Bekker Primary School (7 August 2009)
Gauteng North Championships (15 August 2009) (Compulsory)
You can contact Japie Venter at 082 823 8019. Please note that Primary Schools still need to affiliate to take part in the events on Friday's so that so that they can add your name to their results system.

Smaller groups, individual athletes and development groups will be affiliated via Athletics Gauteng North. Please try and have your school affiliated before the school holidays by obtaining a electronic file from Japie Venter.

·       Secondary school athletes, seniors and masters (Ages 14 and up)

To qualify for the South African Cross Country Championships, athletes have to take part in at least three of the following events of which the Gauteng North Championships is compulsory:
