Cross Country Events
Hi Cross Country friends,
Only 107 days remain before the SA Cross Country championships take place. The event is scheduled for LC de Villiers sports facility on 12 September 2009. Preparations have started and if all goes according to plan, we are in for something really special.
The event at Soshanguve the past weekend was hosted with the help of the department of sport and recreation of the City of Tshwane and the Gauteng department of education. 484 First time runners tried out their cross country legs and astonished the supporters with their talent. 289 seasoned athletes took part in the league event.
We would like to thank our city council and the department of education for their support. Our combined efforts have returned handsome dividends over the past few years. It is estimated that about 80 athletes who started their cross country running through the talent identification events hosted in alliance with the City of Tshwane and the Gauteng Department of Education have earned a position in the Gauteng North team. We are especially proud of Rojean Molekwa who went as far as winning a bronze medal at the National championships.
I would like to thank Joel Balloyi and all the volunteers who worked really hard to make the Soshanguve event great. Results attached.
We now turn our attention to Middelburg where we will compete against Limpopo Atletics, Mpumalanga Athletics, Athletics North West North, Central Gauteng Athletics and maybe a few more. I have every confidence that our team will perform really well.
Event 4, Bronkhorstspruit (06 June 2009)
Events at Bronkhorstspruit are always a highlight on the Gauteng North Cross Country calendar. It is not surprising that Athletics South Africa seriously considered hosting the national championship there later this year. Our fourth domestic event and the third Gauteng North league kicks off at 12:30 at Erasmus High School in Bronkhorstspruit. You can contact Frikkie Geyser at 082 448 8603 for more information.

Junior Age Category
Athletics South Africa has come to our aid and established a clear principle for the "junior age categories" A junior will now include athletes who turn 19 this year. Athletes who may take part in the junior age category include those born in 1990, 1991 or 1992.
Junior men take part in an 8 Km event and Junior ladies in a 6 Km event. There is no Junior 4 Km event. If you really want to take part in a 4 Km event and you find yourself in this age category, you have to enter for the Men or Women 21years 4 Km event.
Please note that the Men and Women 21 years and 23 years age categories only exist for the 4 Km event. If you run in the 8 Km Senior men and Senior Women races, your age category will be defaulted to Senior.

Old Running Shoes
If you have a pair of old running shoes that don't see much action these days, but still have a few miles left on them, please bring them to Run Away Sports. They can give your old runners new homes, so they can finish up their useful life with someone who really needs them. Also children's running shoes for those less fortunate school children, running cross country.
